HELP!!! tank crashed!!!

Very curious about a dead snail or crab! If one died wouldn't the rest of your CUC or cleaner shrimp possibly take care of it?

i would think yes but it would take a while and in a small volume tank it would be fast enough to not affect the h20 chemistry. my hermit too about 1 day to finish 1/4 of a snail and left him alone. ..... and if his cuc is fed and eat left overs they might not be too hungry. you no

thanks a lot for the responses. i won't be getting new picassos until my solana is set up and properly cycled.

I did a 20% water change this morning and swapped new carbon into the tank. the tank doesn't look much different than before. how long do you guys think it'll be before my tank is fully recovered?

pratt, i will definitely do as you said. I just wanted to know if my rock/sand was still viable and whether it was a better idea to start my solana with new rock/sand because of this crash. but hopefully the tank will recover and everything will be back to normal

so what life stock do you have in the tank now? may be umm letting some one hold the fish and anything that that needs feeding would help. including hermits. imo. because the process food and waist and release ammonia . i hope that help. anyone agree or have a input?

What do you mean the tank looks the same as before? The same before it started to crash? The same as during the crash? or Right after the water changes?

IMO the tank is fine now unless it is cloudy again. Give it some time to heal up. Go back to your regular water change schedule but keep the carbon up to date.

He only has two fish now. That is not too many especially if he keeps up with water changes and one is a small clown goby.

Out of curiosity, what do you use to check salinity levels?

sorry domboski, i meant to say that the tank looks the same as on friday; better but not 100% yet. I will definitely keep up with the water changes. no more cloudy water! what do you think caused the cloudy water?

i use a refractometer.

Anytime you have a small tank, Nano-Reef, that is fully loaded, it doesn't take much to crush the whole tank. All it takes is one coral dying, fish or even a snail to cause a spike in ammonia which could crush the whole tank. You don't have the safe net that you do with large tank, more water volume, when somthing dies. In my opinion it's much hard to run a successful Nano-Reef long term than a larger reef tank.

i had some problems months ago with coral dying and found out my refractometer was off and my salt levels were to low. Since i fixed it my tank was doing fine. Worth checking into. Also one time in my quarantine tank, i forgot to top it off and the and my clowns started swimming sideways. They were the only ones effected.

Update: my tank is looking much better compared to a week ago!

xenia is 100% again. GBTA is more open, rics are open more, cloves are getting their color back, and lobo is more fleshy.

I just did a 20% water change and carbon swap after these pics were taken.

The vast majority do. And with a small H2O volume and noxious corals like Xenia and leathers I would say it is a must.

that xenia grows like weeds.i started with a small frag in my 180 and in 6 months it was growing out of control.it will takeover your whole tank.

damn. whenever i read biocube builds, no one ran carbon. people used chemipure or something similar. I will probably look into getting a phosban/carbon reactor for my solana then.

Chemipure = carbon ( slightly different, but serves the same purpose)

All corals, but particularly leather and Xenia corals use a nasty array of toxiic defensive/offensive chemicals that they use to compete with each other. In a small system, these noxious substances can build up and begin to harm the health of the system. In a stressed system theses corals can release a lot of these toxins quickly and cause a full blown crash ( thus my 1st question to you in this thread regarding the health of the Xenia). Carbon helps remove these substances before they become a problem.

its doing a lot better! here's a current pic:

all the corals are open again. the slowest to recover is my frogspawn, which is still a bit bleached, but it's regaining its brown coloration.

i think by the end of this week i'm going to upgrade and move my stuff over to the solana.

Much better. That leather in the front right looks great. It was closed in all of the other pics that I can recall.
