I just replaced the filters in mine after 2 years just because they were 2 years old. TDS were still reading 0 and flow was fine.

We change our filter type of cartridge every 2 weeks. (well water=sediment) so it turns an orange tint.. as soon as it does we change it regardless of the TDS reading being zero or not.
Carbon once a month or so and the DI (we have two) typically every three months or if the TDS's go up.. whichever comes first.

We change much more often than the amount of gallons of water we have made. Figuring all water going into the unit is not the same so the amount of water passing through the unit itself really isn't an accurate measure on how long the filter will last. (As far as the company saying "x" amount of gallons, time to change the filter media)
