hmm I have a pretty large brittle start, a lot bigger than my hand. Now I have not fed this brittle star in months, so today i got home from the petstore with those frozen little fish. I drop a few in the tank the starfish dashes towards the fish then swallows it whole. His "head" then doubled in size and looks like a big fish is in it....is this normal?

yup, thats normal. They head, or skin in the center expend as it take up the shape of the fish/food it swallow whole. Don't worry, it will eat it in a couple of hours.
