Hi
Oysters will do a better job as they can filter some 18 gallons of water per hour...you can read more about it here Elliminating Nitrates and Cynobacteria (

Little Neck Clams, would they help filter in Refugium?

LOL

I did that before, thinking the same but then they become more of a display as some always move up and down the sand/mud during day and night while some would not move at all. Kind of amusing to watch too.

Not sure if they do anything to the filtering but at least the flesh grow puffier than when they first arrive from the seafood stand. :tongueani

I was wondering this too. Isnt the temp. too warm for local oysters. Blue points for example. Not that you couldn't use a warmer climate oyster like a kumamoto or something from northern Cal.
If you can use blue points. I get 100s a week.

I bought a dozen and drop 9 in the refugium for the 90 g and 3 in the 35 g tank. I guess I won't be able to tell if they'd help but it'd be fun.:splitspin

Thanks, I've been watching them, like you said, it's interesting to see they stick out a part of their body and move. Two dug and buried themselves in the sand, that's funny.

Chemchief,
I have two oysters from the LI sound in my 125 reef one in the refuge one in the tank. I put them into my 29 before I got the 125 back in Sept. figured they would help cycle maybe but of course die eventually. Well it's been 8 months and they are both doing fine. Not sure what the real benefit is? Eventually I'll open them up and hopefully get the mother of all perals ;).

Thats my experience...

Hi Wallysworld Hi every one

This is how and oyster operates and in this case it is said to filter 2 gallons per hour. I know other cases that go up to 18 gallons of water, still 2 gallons is very good...enjoy the filtering;)

No easy way to do that for general aquarist.

We cannot not do low salinity, you cannot medicated dip and we don't even know what diease inverts have that can sicken our fish.
Whatever you do to your new inverts in the past, do the same to these guys but as I say earlier keep an eye on them in the early days and make sure you acclimate them like all other inverts.

Do they/should be quarantined to prevent bringing in parasites or other fish diseases? I'd like to add them to my refugium, but would hate to sicken my fish.
