Got a new hippo from reef encounters in hackensack nj. Nice fish but he's not eating anything I try to feed him including brine shrimp, sea weed, prime reef flakes, mixed sea veggie flakes.

He did eat mysis shrimp at the store. Guess I have to go out and get some of that.

Just got him yesterday. He's swimming around well. No signs of sickness. The hippo is picking the algae off of the glass now. He was hiding for the first 12 hours or so but now he is up and about.

What's strange is that any food that goes by him he doesn't pick at. He was eating mysis at the store but is that good for the hippo on a regular basis?

I'm trying mysis tomorrow to see if he takes it.

Don't worry for now, i'm sure it's gonna eat after it gets use to his new home :). Give it another one or two day, as long as it's in good health, there's nothing to worry about, should be eating prepare food in a day or two. The yellow tang that i sold you never even touch the seaweed the first, second time.

Try feeding your hippo romain lettuce, they love it. Rubber band it on a piece of rock and drop it in the tank. Or if you have the clip feeder that's even better. They might not eat it the first, second time, but eventually they'll eat it. Just leave it in the tank, they'll start picking on it when you are not paying attention to it. They aren't too hard to keep. =D

When I got my Marine Betta she wouldn't eat anything but live brine shrimp at first. I tried it once a week for three weeks. And all the time, between the live brine shrimp, tried to feed her krill and silversides. She didn't touch any of them for a long time...but then started picking. Now, just about 2 months later, she's eating everything but flakes! :yeah:

Nori

ECFENCING,

You could try Nori, sushi seaweed (if you haven't already), but don't let it drift by him. From my research Tangs are grazers so he might be more comfortable with a stationary food source.

Ditto on the clip! :)

thanks for the suggestions! I noticed the hippo picking the algae off of the seios and glass. I'll try nori on a clip but the yellow tang is so fast I'm sure it will be gone before the hippo has a chance.
