hey all, I don't have time to post any pics but I have a large piece of robusta that began to rtn the other day. i fragged it and re-mounted it to try and save it, it did not work, it's still rtn-ing and it does not look good.
shaun told me once that coral will put out chemicals while it's dying that might influence other coral to rtn as well.

should I pull the piece from the system, what would you do.

thanks.

Here is an account of RTN from several reefers. The only other corals that seem to be affected are clones of the same colony. Usually others are not affected. But safe is safe.....I say take it out. separate tank

yeah, I've been reading furiously on RC, it does not sound good, I've not read one account of a coral being saved once it RTN's this coral came from reefer madness via spykes. I think I might have to take it out of the tank, but I've got no other tank to put it into. :(

The main causes they say are bacterial or some kind of allergy. If its alergy the frags from the rtn coral can be saved by moving into another system. I can never say as I have never been exposed to it, just regurgitating what I have read or heard. Who is close to you?

Jonathan,

I don't know if it would be any use, but I have an empty 29 gal with a HOB biowheel and heater you're welcome to borrow. I don't know if the lighting is good enough. Anyway, call or reply if interested.

thanks for the offer michael.

I'm not even home now, someone else is taking care of the tank.

I have a feeling that the coral will not make it past the day.

I think it went through too many changes and is reacting to stress.

it was from the wild, collected and put in reefer madness tanks, shipped to ny, put in spykes tank for a few weeks, then taken out and given iodine dips, and placed in my tank. I believe that it was just too much for it to deal with. poor robusta.

I doubt that it will affect other corals in the tank, but you need to have carbon running.

As for saving it, once the RTN process occurs it is almost 99% fatal. Try fragging the tips of the coral.

it's now rtn-ing from the tips, I had nini break it up and save the pieces from the middle, they are now laying on the bottom of the tank.

I don't think the prognosis is good either.

I have some older carbon in there, but it probably should be changed.
I'll have to do it when I'm home on wed.

JH,

FWIW, I stave off RTN by dosing iodine or dipping with a Coral dip (which is Iodine anyway).

I would at least take it out and treat or dose tank with Lugols

House

I hope there is nothing that will effect the rest of the tank, as
I'm not home I have no way of dealing with an rtn epidemic.

I'm betting it's confined to this one piece and brought on by the stress mentioned above. If I'm wrong then I'm SOL big time.
no tank parameters have changed, I did a water change on saturday, and I've been dosing as usual.

I've had 3 colonies of acro from reefer madness RTN on me. They were also all wild corals. The RTN spreads within 1-3 days through the entire colony.
When I spoke to Chris from RM about the RTN on different occassions, he had me super glue the RTN'd areas but this didn't work. On the other occassions I cut the tips at least 1/2" from the RTN creep and none of the frags survived either.

Back in July, I took a trip to Dr Macs and picked up a few wild colonies and a nice large purple humilis also started to RTN from the base up on day 2. I was able to frag about 20 tips off and so far 3 have made it.

Hope your frags come through.

I actually save a coral from RTN... I brought a blue tenius from Kaisei awhile back. It was RTN on me the next day so I fragged it into three pieces. One of the frag survive and the other rtn within the next day. That sole survivor was showing rtn on the base a little, but it stop within the next few days.

Now it growing again.

Try to clip as much as possible. Don't try to save a little by cutting just up to the rtning part. Cut more then you have to.. This I know help a lot..

Good luck!!

I've had good success with fixing the underlying problem (If you can) and leaving the coral alone. If it's acclimated to the spot you've placed it, I'd leave it...fussing with it does more harm than good IME.
If it looks like it's really a goner (75% of the colony has evacuated the skeleton) I'd frag it and place them in different areas of the tank.
Try not to stress it and hope it grows back. Usually works for me.

do u need me/some1 to go by thr? i can be thr in an hourif its an emergency...or i can stop by tomorrow if u want?

thanks mike, but I'm crossing my fingers that nothing else will be effected.

I told nini to look at the tank every few hours to watch the other sps.

If something else happens I'll be driving back to the city immediately.

I might need to buy some carbon from someone though, I think I'm almost out.

actually pm me and let me know if wed. 6 pm. will work to hook up for the clam.
