If it is for a school classroom what is the problem? What sounds weird about a 3rd grade classroom with a fish tank and a lizard tank? Sounds cool to me. I suppose photos would be nice but assuming the worst may not be the best route to go with this.

Some, including my self would tend to wonder about people asking for donation to supply a school. Some people are just scum, praying on the generosity of people who would donate equipment and such.
I don?t think it?s a bad thing to maybe throw a red flag up, kind of like a validation.
I have no problem donating but validating a request would be nice.

I agree with you, some sort of picture would be nice to see. I am speaking as a teacher who works in an underfunded school. We don't even have money for ink for kids to print their papers. It is sad. I am working with a company who is trying to spruce up our 55 gallon freshwater tank (with 3 huge fish and lots of algae) in the science lab. I will post about it once I get any news.

Actually-the person in question picked up the tank and the lizards last night. Right off the bat he made a generous donation. His sister actually knew about teaching, and I got the impression that was was for real, and not a scam. And at this point, if it was a scam, I wouldn't even care-I have heard of much worse scams, and these people (yes, his sister did show up with him, she and my wife talked, and we were completely comfortable with the whole situation) seemed pretty genuine. I also have many friends that teach, I have donated a bunch of animals and fish stuff to them because it enhances the classroom for the kids, and as teachers, they have a very,VERY limited budget, and they have to do all of this by themselves. She gave us a pretty detailed account of what she has in her classroom, and seemed to know her way around the whole pet thing.

And on a side note- if you do have stuff lying around that you can donate, now is the time- kids hate coming back to school after vacation, and new pets in the classroom make it much easier to get them back in the groove. If you KNOW a teacher, ask them if they want that empty 10 or 20 gallon that's lying around since you quit freshwater and started reefing...

And as for animals besides fish and corals...I get them all the time, I just got an UNFIXED 18 month-old Russian Blue male cat- purebred, with paperwork, in perfect health, vaccinated and clean. Go and google it and see how much these cats cost...they don't show up often. This cat will be fostered and then adopted out-with ONLY a $25 adoption fee, which goes to Animal Care and Control, not us.

So I guess the point of this is that when you give stuff away, you are taking a chance that you are being scammed, but that is part of donating things. And if someone does flip what they got for free, sooner or later they have to pay, in one way or another. It doesn't screw up my karma in any way, shape, or form, so I'm okay with it.

+1. Karma.

If someone knows a teacher that would like/could use a 10 gallon terrarium with 5 red bellied toads, (and water dish/rocks/moss/fake plants/etc) I'd love to donate the setup.

I'm adding this to the freebee thread as well, but figured I'd post here.

You have made this accusation before without offering up any proof or even reason for suspicion of any wrongdoing. Could people be scamming in this way? Sure. Are they here on MR? Not to my or anyone elses knowledge. Please have some proof before starting threads about what seems to be nothing.
