stopping the dreaded siphon

How do you guys stop too much water siphoning back into your sump when the power goes off? is it just a matter of having the pump returns positioned high up, close to the surface? I'm trying to think of a way to break the siphon without checkvalves.
My return line is 3/4 PVC pipe that splits into a 'T' ending with one lockline 3/4 return on each side of the tank. (ie x2)
Do I basicly have to keep these right up at the surface to stop half the tank siphoning into the sump in a power outage?

drill a very small hole in the loc line or pvc just at or below the water line. that will stop the siphon.

Aaron, how is the return place on your tank? Meaning is the return going through a hole you drill on the tank or you just have it on top of the tank bracing and then into the tank?

You can break the siphoning by drill a hole on the locline that is near the top or pvc. There is even some locline that has this extrude small hole with a tube to break siphoning..

Drilling the hole is a good way to go. Just hope that its not clogged when the power does go out.

I know its a PITA to put in a check valve to exising plumbing but installing a true union check valve takes up very little time, is easy to remove for cleaning and it can save you so much trouble.

I drilled my lock line adapters. the ones that go from the bulkhead to the locline. there's a place on them that has 2 hexagons of plastic meant for screwing the adapter in place. Between them is a 1/16" or so gap. I just drilled a hole there on the side toward the glass. It also adds a bit of current ot the top corners, which can get stagnant.
