???? whats quieter submersable or external pump

i need some feed back fellow reefer ??????? what's quieter an submersable pump or external pump. and if so recomendation on apump for 600 t0 700 gph. i was told to use quite ones. ???????????????????

Submersibles are usually quieter and I find they tend to not heat the water as much as an external pump (my tanks went up 2 degrees when I switched to external pumps).

The 600-700 gph you are asking about - is that after taking head loss into consideration?

Kathy, this seems like the opposite to what I would expect. How many times were you able to "test" this theory...I used the word "test", I really ment how many times have you switched from external to internal(and Vice Versa) on the same setup?

kathyc its the complete opposite to me i tried both method with two different brand of pump both mag and the quietones pumps and lost two degree when i remove the pump from my sump and install it externally

the external pump is better if u are worried of heat. The pump gives its heat off into the air, a submersible gives its heat off into your water

the quiet1 pumps are pretty quiet, if you need something submersible. that said, i've had both submersible and external at different times and have found that they can both be nearly silent, or noisy, depending on the pump.

in sump make less noise the water absorb the noise a little more but if u install externally u can put a gel pad like mouse pad or something like that to absorb the noise and it the same thing as putting it in the sump

I swtiched from a MAG internal to an external. Barely a hum now. The pump sits on a thin isolation pad too. I use one of these http://www.marinedepot.com/pumps_pan_world_magnetic_px_ps-ap.html or similar puttin gout aprx 700 gpm

External pumps also have to worry about the plumbing, bulkheads, more fittings would mean more potential failure points to worry about.
Not saying that is a deal breaker but you do have to consider it.

$ no object, then get a flowstar or red dragon both are quiet, provide lots of flow and use very little electricity. if $ is a concern, i vote Eheim, great durable pump will last for years.

Just to add to this thread because it brings up an interesting discussion.....I also experienced more heat on my external pump. I was using a gen-x pcx55 pressure rated pump and switched to a submersible Eheim 1262 and I saw a 1-2 degree decrease in temp (eheim is very quiet also).

perhaps it's because you went from a 170w 28ft max head pressure rated external to an 80w non-pressure rated 11ft max head submersible. :biggrinpa
