Is there a super to ask? Or do you know anyone in construction that knows how those buildings were put together. If it's pre war my guess is timbers tendoned into the wall.
If you went parrallel to an exterior wall a 48 inch wide tank would rest on how many joists?
90 gallons over two joists possibly 3 I think you would be ok. As long as you were close to a wall.

Figure about 1,400 lbs total weight. Including sand and 120lbs rock. See if you can go to your local library and find the floor plans to your building to help. Or speak to the super of the building if you have one. Hope this helped somewhat.

We are all concerned about this when we plan our tanks. Which is a good thing.
Has anything gone horribly wrong or has anyone had any first hand accounts of something going wrong?

I believe water is 8 lbs per gallon. 1st I would get permission from the landlord/super before you do anything because most wont allow a tank of that size on the upper floors because of the stress the weight will put on the beams which will cause the ceiling in the tenant's apartment below to crack and the damaged that can be caused by a major leak and or seem failure. If you get the green light (Which would be cool)you will be responsible for any damage that is caused by the tank so proceed with caution.
