so my buddy usually calls me before every purchase to ask me if he can put whatever fish he is interested in his tank. well he went to wayne pet place and they had like a 3 inch tall and 7 inch long dog face puffer. they were selling it for only 40 bucks for some reason. they said he was fine and healthy. so he bought before he called me and told me about it. problem is i think something is VERY wrong with it. wtf is all over his head and stomach. its all bumpy and looks like he is 1000 years old. his body looks like a 3rd degree burn or an old persons skin when it sags. i took a picture last night. this cant be normal...what do you think it is or what happened to him and any information you can give me would be great.

Ryan in all the my previous years with aggressive tanks, and those of my friends, and all the lfs I have been to I have never seen a dog face puffer with anything like that.
Is there a chance that he can take it back for a refund? There is no way that is a healthy df puffer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

trust me, i know and i 100% agree with you. the thing is is that my buddy felt horrible that this fish was sitting there for weeks and weeks sitting in the same spot and hates seeing fish neglected. so he had to get it. it swims around and is eating very well and acts like nothing in the world is wrong. i was just curious what this could be and if there is anything he could do to help him in any way to have a healther life. if he returns it, then its just going to sit there again. he is not going to do that.

Well good for him ryan at least itll lead a good life in his tank and not rot in a LFS tank because no one wants a sickly looking puffer- as long as its not diseased with something that will kill off his other inhabitants may turn out to be a fish that he likes the most from personality or what not

yeah well my buddy is exactally the same way but even more. he has a 135g tank and a 75g tank. the 135 is your typical aggressive tank but the 75 is a medicated tank that he will litterly go to any random lfs and shop for sick or wounded fish just to try and save. he has had fish with velvet, flukes, ick, hel, lld, pop eye, distroyed fins, burnt from carpet anemones, skinny fish, scratches, you name it and he has had it. the ood this is is that he actually saves 85% of them. from doing dips to actually seeing him inject food with a baster into a fish that refused to eat and half dead and saved him. the puffer may end up going to him. we will see. i need to show him first. he actually heals alot of fish and gives them away to a good home once they are perfect for a few months. alot of fish could look like SH** completely dead looking covered in disease or whatever and a few weeks later you see it and you would never think its the same fish. he is a real good guy and you cant help but respect him. i really have to get him on this site.

Dude I have been buying fish from the wayne pet place for years as a matter of fact the only fish that lived thru my ich cycle was his fish. I have known Sal from pet place for nearly 20 years and I have never seen something so nasty in his tanks ever he usually sells healthy fish the guy has 50 year old parrots for crying out loud this story sounds FISHY. I might have to call Sal and question him on this 1 b4 I will let any1 trash his place and name. Sorry Ryan it looks like a IPR reject. thank god your buddy does'nt have a pool or he would be trying to save beached whales to.

You said that the fish had been in the store for a pretty long while with that, yes? I'm going to guess that it is viral/cancer (there's a lot of overlap--one causes the other sometimes). Take good pictures now, then see how he looks in a couple of weeks. If he's the same, and he's eating, he'll probably live with it for a good while. Either way, there is no treatment for either of those things. As for whether it is contagious--possibly, but he's already in the system so too late for that. Best thing you can do for this fish is to minimize stress: exceptionally good, varied diet (lots of crustaceans, molluscs, chunky meaty foods, with Selcon and vitamin supplements), good water quality, make sure no one is beating him up. You could try beta-glucan; it tends to stimulate the immune system. Won't hurt either way.

tony call your buddy sal up. i can even ask my friend who sold him it. and you may of had luck, but i know about 3 people that claim the fish purchased from him died within a few days, and its not there water quality. i bought my orange back basslet from him and still have him today going on 8 months now and im very happy with him, yet i also have bought a flame cardinal, indigo dottyback and a christmas wrasse and they lived between 2-5 days and soon became flushers. but everyone knows how it is, its hit or miss, not really the lfs store fault so i dont want to say anything bad about him. he gets nice stuff at reasonable prices. and if you call him you can ask him yourself if he knows whats on it.

the puffer is actually being given to my friend i spoke of who tries to save all unhealthy fish so we will see how it goes. he is eating and seems happy so far. hopefully all goes well

I suggest you get some really high quality pics of the fish and send them to an aquarium or someone qualified to diagnose what that might be. Everyone, including me, seem to have never seen anything like it. The one guy who said a cancer had the best suggestion so far. A Marine Biologist at an aquarium might be able to help.
