30g high, filtration?

okay so im redoing my rockwork in my 30g high and i have a question or two..

do i need any mechanical flitration? i have a maxijet 400 on it for circulation and i had a HoB rater for 50g. i forgot the brand but its a basic HoB with filter pads..

the filter pads just seem like they dont do much, they get real dirty real quick and was wondering if i should just use LR, weekly water changes/top off and use an in tank refugium with some chaeoto as my filtration rather that have this ugly looking HoB filter..

i have about 40-50 lbs of LR to spare as i just re did my 46 G DT. looks awesome =]

any info would be great. just need a little input before i decide to not put a HoB on my tank.

oh yeah my livestock is a pair of mandarins, dragonface pipefish 3-4" and flagtail pipe 2".

and a pearly jaw that i might be moving to my 46g idk yet.

get alot of macro to put in tank, will do alot of the filtration, make tank look very natural and also good place for pods ect seeing the type of fish you want to keep, and just so you know one or more will eventually starve out if you cant get them eating frozen

get ur self a good hob skimmer, if you have live rock and dont overload the tank thats all you need... check out masterswimmer's (he's a manhattan reef member and an all around good guy) store salwater critters, or look at the aquac hob remora. Good skimmer is all the mechanical filtration you need on a tank that size... and lose the HOB filter you have all its doing for you is moving water.

thanks guys =] ill look into the skimmer as i only have 1 for my 46g bow , and both my mandarins eat frozen, just the pipefish are too small, im gnna pick up some frozen bbs, and cyclopeeze tomorrow. i would grow my own bbs but i ran out of eggs =/

the zoo in peekskill has a tank of macro... and at all star aquarium al has a ton of calerpa growing in his overflow he'd be happy to get rid of. Al will get it in for u too

honestly almost everyday you see people on here giving away macro algae all the time. you should just post wtb macro algae in the marketplace. thats what i did and i got ALOT feedback. just letting u know

just go to a lfs and buy enough live rock rubble to fill it up.

nyreefnoob- i appreciate it but i cant make it to the swap, id rather spend the 50$ on equipment or fish./frag or something. very tight budget these days.

philyd- thanks for the offer but id rather build my own sump with a rubbermaid than have to worry about ukeeping a canister filter, id rather someone who9 can use it take it off of your hands thanks anyway though i appreciate it.

motor - thanks for answering for me =] lol ill post some pics of my rocks as soon as i get some energy to gtf off my lazy ass. ive been sick for like 3 weeks, im almost better now.. but just really weak =/
