Hey. I was talking to a buddy of mine who was running 3 - 400 watt halides over his 300 gallon tank and he mentioned that his electricity bill went up $600 a month. Anyone else experience this with 400 watters? Thanks.:goldfish2

He use PSE&G? They started doing tiered rates. i.e. the first hundred kilowatts are $0.25 per kilo, the 100-400 kilowatts are $0.40 per kilo, etc. It gets really insane at the farther ends.

if your paying $900 a month in the summer for elec, you should 100% look into solar panels, or a small wind turbine for your house. There are incredibly efficent solar panels out there and considering your outrageous bill, the gov't subsidies for green energy, the payback for the equipement should be under 5 years then ur making money.

well thats where the concept of payback comes into play... lets say you spend 20,000 dollars on a solar panel set up. Off the bat your gonna get around $6000 in tax deductions through gov't incentive programs. So ur out of pocket $14,000. now lets say it lowers your monthly bill to $250 a month your saving $650 a month on elec. The system will have paid for itself in roughly 21 months. The thing to remeber is that you are spending the money the solar panels would cost ANYWAY on your electirc bill, and you will continue to spend that money over and over and over again. The numbers i used are not really accurate but they explain the principle of payback. Over time a solar panel system will pay for itself several times over, unfortunately most people would rather spend a nickel a day for the rest of their lives than lay out $50 upfront to never have to do it again. obviously a $50,000 investment for a payback that will take 50 years isnt a smart investment because technologies change/improve over time, but in a situation where your laying out almost $1,000 a month for electricity a 20,000 dollar investment to lower your bill even by half is money well spent.

I was at a seminar recently and theres a local company that specializes in small residential units, they find all the credits, gov't programs you can get, and provide continued support. Ill track down the guys info and shoot you a pm. Not sure if they do direct financing but there are other ways to finance it (home equity etc...)

but they will come in and do a study of your electrical needs and work up a system for you which will include an estimated time it will take for the system to pay for itself, and you can look and see if its a worthwhile investment.

You should ask PaulB ... there is a thread about the solar panels ... I know nothing of it personally ... nor do I own a house atm so this is not an option ... but Paul did make the purchase so I really suggest venturing to the nudibar if you haven't already to get the whole story. :)

To the OP ... you should ask your friend what kind of pumps he is running on that 300G tank ... ever look into the XXL external pumps and how much wattage they use which need to run 24/7 365 days a year. Pumps usually cost more to run then your lights. Given, 400W is 400W ... but you are NOT running them ALL day long. There is a calculator on here to determine how much each item you are running costs on a monthly basis ... I don't have the link on hand ... maybe someone can post it.

My solar system cost me $23.000.00 to install myself which I did in 4 days.
I received over $20,000.00 back in rebates and taxes so it cost me less than $3,000.00. It saves me $100.00 a month so it pait for itself in a year and a half. Now my monthly electric bill is about $69.00
