Hey Solana Owners.
What measures have you taken to Quiet the overflow of your tank?
For me the sponge idea is all I have tried. But it seem like the sponge needs to be deep in the overflow to work.
The water in the overflow seems to have a long way to drop.
Also if the sponge gets clogged, the tank can overflow. I am on the second floor so this is not an option.LOL

Also I am the second or third owner of the tank. (funny story) So the other day my wife calls and says. The water level in the tank seems pretty high. LSS. I asked her to unplug the pump and leave the vortech on. When I got home, i fished around with a coat hanger in the overflow and pulled out an old sponge. Then Again, And Again, and better still again. YES 4 old sponges in the overflow Clogged with MUD. The most digusting Mud filled filter pads I have ever seen. And I own Turtles!!!
This must be why my nitrates have been 50ppm even doing 7,,,,Yes,,,7 gallon water changes each week.
So beware your filter pad falling into the overflow.
My SPS came back in 2 days (Flesh) Now I just have to see if it will color up.
My nitrates 2 weeks later are 0. (with 14 gallon water change)

was just in the middle of a water change and filter change so heres what i personally do...

I cut a filter pad smaller than the opening. and use a paper clip to have it sit there..i dont hear anything. if you dont change it every week it will start to rust from what i have seen. but wont unless you dont keep up with changing it..heres some pictures.

sometimes for the first day you can still hear but then it goes away and virtually silent.

thats a thin polyfilter from mediabaskets.com [stevie t]

LOL. Goog argument for buying new.

My experience is that the sponge must be up high to catch the overfow water before it hits the back of the overflow pipe. When the sponge is all the way up my overflow is toally silent. The sponge tends to get pushed down so i pull it out and rinse it off every couple weeks.

i dont know anything abt these so i may be totally out in left field, to they drain down to a sump? if they do you can put a valve on it to restrict the drain flow slightly so itll increase the height of the water in the back compartment so the water doesnt fall so far making alot of noise...ive never had one of these, ive seen some with a sump on here so thats just a thought....

Solana is an AIO with the sump part of the glass tank seperated by a plastc wall.
I looked in my tank. The water level in the 1st chamber is maintained at at a fixed height for the skimmer. This is a few inches below the overflow. The sponge when all the way up is still deep enough to prevent any splashing. It's a nice simple design and works well. You're tank may have been modified causing the noise problem.

Tank is totally Stock. Sponge IMO does not do much to quiet it down. I was really wondering if anybody has done anything else to solve the problem that seems to exist with all Solana's

OK, maybe this will work for you. I made a sponge support out of eggcrate. It sits on the supports intended to hold the sponge so it raises the sponge by the thickness of the eggcrate. It should stop the sponge from slipping downward. You need the sponge high to avoid the splashing of the cascading water from the overflow.

Tank shots are with the sponge removed to show the eggcrate.
