What happens when you have an established tank and have been using tap water, then you switch to RO/DI..... do you have to drain all out and start fresh? or just continue your water changes with the new RO/DI water?
Would the tap water impurities stay in the sand, rock and remaining water?

The remaining tap water would diffuse as more rodi was added.
Eventually you will replace all your water but it takes a while.
Theoretically you would never replacw it all.

kaoz, I started my reef with tap water many many moons ago. I switched to RO/DI 3 years ago while doing water changes. No need to start from scratch. The tank is now doing great.

if you started with tap water (which i did aswell) you might wanna consider using a pura pad in conjuction with the ro water changes. The pura pad will help remove the silicates and phosphates found in tap water that lead to diatom algae blooms. They can be cut into any shape and can be placed in skimmer returns, sumps, prefilters, hang on's, etc.
