Since the pH measures the acidity level of the water its very important to keep it a close match to natural seawater so it doesn't "burn" our livestock with a lower PH. It's also important to say that its an exponential measure where for instance 7.0 its 100 times more acidic than 8.0. The measure goes from 0 to 14, 0 being acidic, 14 basic and 7 neutral. To get an idea of the pH effect, coffee that can be irritating to our stomachs has a ph or 5 or 6, Coke that can dissolve a tooth has a ph of 3 to 4. Also if you have worked with low ph fresh water fishes you'll notice your hand's skin gets drier after working with water with a ph of 6 or 6.5. Now imagine living in a pool with a Ph that your skin is not made for.

:link: pH7.0 is only 10times more acidic then pH8.0 ;) but ditto with the rest. But the question is why did sw fish evolve to live in a basic pH? since hardwater, which is basic can dry out your skin too. It's probably do to many years of evolving with the envionment(since the oceans were acidic before life on the planet), you are made to survive where you live in

The metabolisim of living organism affect water chemistry in two basic ways ,1.Gas exchange mostly oxygen and carbon dioxide and 2.Exchange of dissolved nutrients nitrogen ,phosphorus and a variety of micronutients.Animals release feces, plants lose parts and so on.They all excrete organic compounds such as ammonia .These processes use oxygen, release carbon dioxide and produce nutrients. In marine ecosystems oxygen is generally the most important of the two gases. Carbon dioxide CO2 reacts with water to form carbonic acid.
In water significantly affected by the activity of organisms much more carbon dioxide will be dissolved than oxygen. Carbon dioxide bicarbonate, carbonate, hydrogen and pH present in any given water mass is a function of the interaction of several chemicals equilibria:temperature, salinity and pressure.Conditions can be determined by testing for pH,ALK,CO2 etc. Sea water is strongly buffed for pH and generally ranges from 8.00-8.40.Because of the ions present ,great changes in carbon dioxide are necessary to affect a small change in pH although most marine organisms are particularly susceptable to small pH changes and in this respect the environmental status is crucial.
As sea water flow in over a reef driven by constant winds it pick up extra oxygen during the day because of excess photosythesis. At night the same water loses oxygen due to the respiration and with out photosythesis of both plant and animal this lowers pH levels.
A reef environment, pH ranges from about 8.10 -8.30 with early morning pH at about the lower end and late afternoon or early evening at the upper end of the range.

dre - Interesting but that is about how the fish affect the water..not how PH affects fish. :fishhit:

Interesting Ivrp13, but not the answer to the question. :fishhit:

Alvin!! :fishhit: Who asked anything about why SW fish evolved to live in basic pH???

Anyone else want to try? Here is ther question again:

Fluctuating pH is the easiest way to stress/kill a fish. Why pH is so important to the health of our FISH? :fish:

kathy, the pH fluctuates all the time ;) what kind of range are we talking about here?

pH is important to the health of our fish becuase their physiological pH is affected by the pH of the water, and will disrupt their mtabolism

Kathy, I think your lookining for a very specific answer.
The pH is very important at some many levels becasue it has effects on salinity, gas exchange, calcium, minerals in water, etc.
And thats besides the physiological and metabolism effects which are very important as well.

That said, it might so important because its effects on the system overall with a fluctuacion as little as .5 points.

Fluctuating pH is the easiest way to stress/kill a fish. Why pH is so important to the health of our FISH? :fish:[/QUOTE]
