Since the oil is destroying everything. I feel limitations on the parts of the ocean that are being effected on all corals and sea life should be lifted. After all everything is going to DIE. So midas well give U reefers a chance at keep it alive. At the same time that would give You guys a price break as well. hopefully...

Ideas? Comments? all welcome.

Take the Limitations off of taking corals out of the part sof the ocean that have oil because they are going to die anyway.

While this initially seemed like the worst idea I've ever heard, the idea (with some major changes in purpose and execution) could have some merit.

The idea of opening up restricted corals and fish to hobbyists "because they're all gonna die" is just a bad idea. However, I think controlled collection by specific institutions in order to propagate and preserve could be a wise idea. In areas that will be hit by this oil slick, a massive harvest might not be a bad idea. If done properly, they could be used once the area is cleared to re-propagate and seed the reef.

It shouldn't be opened up to hobbyists and the commercial markets. If anything SOME should be transported to science facilities dedicated to Marine Research.

You hit the nail on the head, aznt. If open to commercial vendors, there's the potential that Joe Schmo who's tank has been set up for 45 minutes could populate his system with the corals in question, in which case they would also face ill fate. IF they are collected, they should be put in the hands of experts, not hobbyists. (Not that I mean that there aren't indeed hobbyist that could be considered experts, but you know, leave it to the institutions where a Marine Scientist dedicate could their day to monitoring the coral.):division:

+1 Definitely should be collected by some scientists who won't FK it up

Nah...not going to work...That's almost as good as the Japanese Scientists who hunts whales for "research" and most of them ended up on the plates of some fancy restaurants all over the world.... In this case, it will just end up in some black market.

Lol dude we aren't in Japan. When I say this I am referring to real facilities. There is a scientist in Indonesia who basically rebuilt a decimated reef by maintaining and planting frags of corals he took from the other side.

We have well respected members of our reefing community making positive, proactive recommendations to attempt a rescue effort to save hundreds of thousands of acres of coral reefs. Making a negative statement that offers no insight, valuable information or suggestions doesn't make sense or add to a valuable conversation. If you have an alternative approach to accomplish a positive result in the tragedy in the Gulf please offer it.

what corals are down there anyways ? other then when you hit the florida area, i dont think they are too concerned with corals and fish at the moment, but more on how to get the oil to stop, and all the people who have lost their jobs over the spills, fisherman ect and the beach's and ect that are being destroyed from this
