yes that is correct out of my rodi they read 0.03 I am using a hanna meeter

When I add my saly brightwell they go up to 0.25 I can not add that into the tank.

Does any one have any data that would co inside with my findings.

If you have a hanna meeter test your rodi then test when you add the salt in it and post up the finding on here. Maby this can help us out to kill the phosphates in our tanks

Anthony,

Garbage In, Garbage out.

RO/DI water should have 0 phosphates tested with a good test kit. I use Salifert. I am assuming your meter is working fine. If that is the case, I would check with your vendor on RO/DI and have them help you figure out problem, such as replacing one of the cartridges, etc.

Yes Anthony, fix the rodi first - you obviously have an issue there.

Also keep in mind there IS +/- variation with Hanna Meters. Did you run the test more than once (you're supposed to and then take the average of 3 tests to get your most accurate results) ;)

Good thing you found this before any problems.

Kathy I've read this a few times from people but have yet to see this in the docs on the meters, do you know where this 3 test rule came from or are you saying just re-read the same sample?

I test phosphates every day the ro water tank water top off water, I have become a over tester.

Anthony,

If you are testing this frequently, it sounds like you have a very bad problem.

While I see that you want to dose carbon, I would try to find out what is causing this problem. I can see testing on a regular basis, but to test this frequently, would drive me crazy.

Have you determined what is the problem with phosphates in your tank. Is your bio load through the roof? Do you have a DSB, do you feed a lot.

Did you have tank crash, etc.

A while back, my sandbed went bad. I removed the top layer and the problem went from phosphates through the roof, to 0 phosphates as tested by Salifert test kit.

Good luck,

The phosphates from what I read in his post- is before he adds it to his tank- its in his fresh mix. So if the problem is in the tank as well the RO/brightwell seems to be where the prob is and seems like he wanted to post his findings to also inform others.

I believe thats how I read it at least Anthony?

Its also been said many times on here by very experienced reefers that phosphate kits are pretty much all useless- no matter the name- API, Salifert, Elos. If your test shows positive its because theyre through the roof- hence the statement even if your phosphates are 0 you still have phosphates. The Hannah meter or other photometers -whatever theyre called is the only way to get a true reading on your phosphates. Ive also heard that .03 phosphates on a Hannah are what you want to aim for. If you ever have true 0 readings on a hannah your tank will suffer- living things need phosphates to live, its just when they get excessive is when you have problems. Simon Garrett was tellin me at the last swap that on his merc lab test kits(the ones we cant get) when he got absolute 0 his tank didnt do so great. Then when he got it to where they showed up just a bit his tank started doing much better.

Good luck on the phosphates Anthony.

Jimmy,

I just did the test now my tank water is zero 0.00 the rodi water is 0.00

I changed over my bucket to a salt bucket thanks to dr harry.

Now when I add the salt it came out to 0.25 how did 0.00 go to 0.25 and yes I am using a hanna meeter.

I cleaned off the glass bottles buffed them out made sure nothing was on them and kept the hanna meeter still

and it still tested 0.25 then 0.26 then 0.25 I tested using new re agent, and also I let the re agent sit in the vial for 5 minuts before the inatial test and then waited 5 minuts for every test. I cleaned out the vials dried them off and then tested again and it kept on reading 0.26

I am going to do re search on the salt maby it is the way I am housing it the bag is closed and I have it in with my carbon and phosband but all of it is sealed.

Never had a tank crash or any thing, I am going with sps and I want to have as little phosphates as I can. I also have noticed that the salt gives off a oder of iodine and has a very bad thermical reaction when it comes into contact with water.

I have some algie in the tank but nothing major. I am just watching out for the tank and my coral so I test this much to avoide a crash or any mishapps

I think I did, can it also be how you house the salt. I have the salt in a bad and the bag yes stays closed, but I know for a fact that the salt heats up when I add it to the water. I have no problem using other birghtwell porducts at all and I can see a amazing growth rate of coral in the tank from them, but the salt I am very leary about.
