I just found my clown that i bought 5 months ago. Thought he died but today saw him swimming and eating, why he never made it to the filter sock like the other 10 fish i found dead in there due to much water flow. The problem is he is so fast and with two pipes a net does not fit easy in there, so i guess thats his new home

My uncle had a wrasse live back there for over 2 months. We thought it was dead so didn't bother looking till one day while doing maintenance it jump out and landed miraculously in the tank.

New home?? Is the 'old home' cutoff six months?? lol

I'm stunned at the replies to your question about how long people have had fish living in their overflow. Apparently reefers with long term 'resumes' are skipping over this thread. I've had fish (and seen fish) living in overflows for so many YEARS that they were forgotten about so long ago that when breaking down the tank the reefer completely forgot where the fish even came from.

Years and years and years are possible. Obviously not the ideal home, especially for a fish that can grow large. Small fish there is no limit on how long.

You guys are lucky.. just last week I had my blue spot jaw jump in my over flow and went down the drain and straight into the my nac7.

Skimmer stopped working so I checked the skimmer pump, what do ya know? See a dead jawfish in there.

Doesn't stop here though...

(same day, just a couple hours later)

Had my golden moray do the same smart move as the jawfish.. Lost 2 creatures in 1 day...

I had a Flame Wrasse in one for about 6 months. I'd just feed him in there, did finally get him out :)

My Yellowtail Coris also went in..but manged to get him back out after a fairly short time period or he'd be dead by now.

I'm working on a solution to cover the overflows...my next reef tank invention :)

i had a wrasse live in the overflow for about 2 years or so. It was my first fish only tank and i bought a wrasse not knowing about their jumping abilities. One day he went missing and i assumed he died and was under the rocks or something. Anyway, the tank was up for about 2 years after that before i broke it down and found the wrasse. Amazing to say the least. One thing though, back then i used to keep a sponge on my drain pipe so thats how he avoided being sucked in.
