The PH will swing somewhere between 7.9-8.3 between day and night. That is normal. If it is falling outside that range, then it might be an issue, depending on how far and how long out of that range.

What could cause my PH to go over 8.3? I measured it last night around 8.4... Shouldn't the buffer keep it at 8.3 max? I don't want to add more buffer as my KH is at 10 and the buffer makes it higher. Any ideas?

Buffers are to raise alkalinity and hence PH. So I do not think you should be trying to add any more at all. Are you adding kalk? that would be on reason.

PH ranges between 7.9 and 8.4 and it is not really bad at all. Mine varies from 8.1 to 8.3 in Summer because there is more fresh air. Winter usually 7.8 and 8.2 with the windows closed. I have a calcium reactor that I mostly use during the summer and I have acquired now a Kalk reactor that I plan to use during winters. I have a sump in the basemment and a lot of CO2 to dissipate. My SPS corals do not demand both to be running at the same time yet but helps me keep the pH above the 8.00 mark. DO NOT STRESS to much if you PH is between 7.9 and 8.4. My SPS coral are thriving within those ranges.

U dont need PH buffers. fresh air will keep your PH stable i keep my living room windows open half way so my tank gets lots of fresh air and that keeps my PH stable 8.3 day and night . if i close the windows for a couple of days then PH starts to drop to 8.1 thats how i know its time to open windows again thats the only PH buffer i use and its FREE :)

First make sure that there really is a pH problem
Ck pH kits
Calibrate Ph monitors
Then lets lets review what can make your pH go down
Alk has a direct relationship with pH (low alkalinty)
CO2 from kitchen if your tank is near
full house of people (CO2 in the air dissolves into water, it becomes carbonic acid)
At night photosynthesis and respiration decreased hence lowing pH
CO2 reactor
high ORP
low aeration

Correction of these problem issues will assist in maintaining consistant pH levels
