nothing has been proven they are better, most people will try andsell on the transition being smoother ect, getting a skimmer that is very well balanced, air-water-to neck is the key. how big of a system and stocked is it ? another thing to keep in mind is require sump depth, as alot of people found out afterwards on the octo cone that it needs to be in 5.5-6.5 water depth

np when ur really ready to buy one let me know, and going with a much lager skimmer isnt better, the skimmer will skim the nutrients ten wont run consistant because of this, i went through it with the vertex in180 on my80g system, loved the skimmer so much i bought it twice, currently use a modified vertex in100 on my system now

You can easily raise the skimmer in the sump with egg crate to the appropriate height.

thats if you have the room to do so, this was the hold back for me on the octo 2000 cone, if i raised it the 4" i would have needed to i wouldnt have room left to take collection cup off under my stand

infornost that a good idea also i thought about that too but room is tight so i would rather a skimmer that i can just throw in the sump

Gotcha, I forgot about that, that's one of the reasons why I put my sump on the side, the other reason was for ease of maintenance.

I dont know if I would say cones are better. I recently installed a Vertex Alpha cone 250 and a Vertex generation 3 in250 on systems with similar bio loads. The in sump 250 which cost less than $300 pulls out more waste than the Alpha cone. I will say i have never seen a skimmer built better than the Alpha cone but for the $$$$ if it doesn't skim like an animal i don't think its worth it. The in250 is very similar to the old Euroreef skimmers. You cant beat the in250 for the price and performance

;) mellowtang i have always been a fan of the vertex, same company buils bk, the problem with the alpha's was they rushed and didnt find a proper balance between air-water and body, the 170 was the worse for this balance. even if someone got the vertex and upgraded pumps { i did on the in100 } your still less into it then a higher dollar skimmer

i think the octopus 160 extreme is perfect for your tank size and water level.

I would go with the SRO cone series, I had the extreme 160 with the Sicce pump and didn't care for the pump it was noisy and shutdown on it's own, I modified the ext160 to accept the Bubble Blaster pump then it really took off. Also the extreme series is 2" taller than the SRO series 1000 so the fitment under the stand would essentially be the same.

ok the input are getting good so think the extreme is out i cant stand noisy pumps and do love how the sro look with that new bubble blaster pump ..i got another question are the space saver with the pump inside the skimmer any different than the ones with pump outside ?? as far as how much the skimmer pull out
