10 or 12 years ago it was a hobby. now that i'm getting back into it, for some reason it no longer feels like a hobby. what has happened to the days when people traded corals or advice for fun. now it seems like a business. does everyone want to make money off a coral they bought for $50.00 they sell frags for double. what they paid..people please just enjoy yourself .. it's not about money it's about making friend and sharing corals and enjoying what mother nature has given us..

Unfortunately it hasn't been a hobby for quite some time now. The name of the corals and the Ltd Edition and Tyree pieces changed that. Now every coral has a name, even the start corals are being given name, just to jack up the price.
people we are supposed to be in it for fun not for the all mighty dollar.. we are a selcet few who are into this hobby. if we want to keep it thriving aren't we supposed to healp each other not make money.. u see i have been a member since 2003 longer then most of u.. can't we all just enjoy what we have and help eachother... it's not about the money or who has a better skimmer or it's about people sharing something .. maybe i'm wrong..

pauliwalnuts. i have have gone threw some personal stuff divorce and other obstacles in life. the one thing i know is that i love the hobby and slowly getting back into it.. looking to meet some good friends who enjoy the hobby n aren't in it to making a buck. make some friends and swap corals and help a fellow reefer out..after all isn't that what this hobby of ours is all about

I couldn't agree more the money that people try to sell some used equipment for almost price of brand new buyer beware I guess

For me it is not a hobby but a way of life, I have had a tank continousely every day of my life and I am pushing 62. The week saltwater fish became available in NY in 1971 I set up a tank which is still running. Over the years I have given away lots of fish and corals for various reasons and never charged anyone for them. It's a hobby.
I have sold gadgets for the hobby that I patented and manufactured but that is business and I don't push it on anyone. I have made money in my life doing other things (like working) and if I have to depend on this hobby to make money, I would have to eat my fish.
I enjoy the hobby and I would not know another way to start my day than to walk past the tank and feel the glass to check the tempersature.

mpisciotti this a really good thread and for starting it up i like throw some thing in ur tank to help u get started again i dont know what ur looking for or what teaste in coral is but i have softies and lps i am uptown bx tho dont if ur ever on my side but just help get the hobby feeling back

thanx for offering me corals . see this is what the hobby is supposed to me about. people sharing stuff n ideas and becoming friends.. well my tank wom't be up for a while i want to get all my equip first.. def going to take you gentlemen up in the corals when my tank is up and running and cycled first.. lookig forward to meeting you guys in the future..
See, for me it's pretty simple. I just ignore rediculously priced corals and wait for somone offering a fair deal.
There are plenty of generous people on MR. also.
I personally have never sold a coral. But some of my corals are in other peoples tanks, and I have gotten some for free also.
Just weed the greedy people out. eventually they will go away.
