+1 on the washing machine. Don't use bleach though. I use two socks but keep 4. That way I wash every other day and have a fresh clean one everyday. My sump is a rubbermaid stock tank in basement so they're really easy to pull off and change.

Don't you guys worry about any detergent left behind from the last wash? I just cleaned 5 7" socks last night, by hand and it was a pain. I've been very hesitant to wash mine in the washer.

I use the filter socks from salt water critters, still by far the best filter socks... every 3-4 days I take them off, put clean ones on, then sit the filter sock in a bowl of water and bleach. Then I rinse it out with got high hot water pressure water, soak it over night in fresh water, and rinse once more. Tell a sniff, and if its bleachless then ready to go on again. Nice, white, clean, no bleach smell, and does not wear away or deteriorate the sock.

I still have a sump with no socks. The first chamber has egg racks and live rock. Do u guys feel the sock idea is better than the old fashion live rock thing. I'm changing my sump and found one with socks
