Very interesting post...
Black Tangs are endemic fish which lives in South Pacific around few islands, singly or in pairs in quite deep water and they never was offeret in massive wholesale offers but mostly occasionally, please dont understand me wrong that absolutely not offense... but maybe that was some other fish? 20 years ago maybe scopas was called black as we can find this wrong name for this fish even today in some poor stores.
My black tang died about 2 years ago cause of overheat but how jusy this fish is you can tell only if you have one in your tank and can take care of this guy. I love his velvet, shiny black body blue fins and white spikes... but like you and some other people will not pay $800 well even will not pay $400 hehe in my opinion this fish should cost about $150-200.

Regards,
mark

no They were black tangs I'm not knocking the fish please dont get me wrong I just think it shouldnt command a 800 price tag thats all
I'm no expert but I've been in this hobby 30 years and have been my share of wholesalers.
we also bought fish through Aqua Tropics which was the original name of Absolutely fish.
Pet shops and wholesalers will only get those prices as long as people are willing to pay them

yeah, black tangs are now very rare to find in the wild, I am pretty sure that the price will only get higher in the following years.
$800 is actually a good price for a small specimen, I am sure that it will be sold no problem.

I have more pics albano somewhere on this comp, I'm sure the guy I sold it to would also allow me to stop by and take some more pics. The fish was just to big for my tank, The tank in the picture was a shallow grow out tank if you wanna call it that and there were maybe 7 corals in it and all on theat one side. To offer some type of shelter. The tank was only 4' x 2' by 10"s high, not really the tank to keep him in , and I got pushed back on my larger tank and it wasn't fair to the fish. I do know where to get another one if you are interested. The guy brings in about a dozen every 3 months or so.

I never remember Absolutely fish being called Aqua Tropics. They opened their doors in 1995 under the name of Everything Fish.
