Now I am looking to build my first 40 gallon rimless coral reef tank with the appropriate amount of fish for the tank.

Welcome to MR Rich! "appropriate" --- I like the sound of that.

Looks like you're off to a good start with that mentality. Good luck and enjoy the hobby & site.

Thanks Flowerhorn and Lenny. I hope to talk a lot about corals, equipment, fish and general subjects that relate to this hobby. I can't wait to get up and running. I am a big picture taker so rest assure you will see many pics, maybe even videos.

Hey can someone tell me how much daily time is necessary to keep up with a coral reef tank with a few fish. I plan on going to law school this time next year and I wanna make sure I can handle both at same time. I don't mind an hour a day. Thanks.

II find that my daily feeding only takes a few minutes a day, but I look at the tank for a little while. It's the weekly maintenance/water changes that can take a while. I top off my tank twice a day usually, and feed, otherwise, day to day stuff doesn't take me very long.
I may do a spot feed for my corals once a week which can take longer, but not very much.

Oh ok I dont mind taking time to look at the corals, thats the fun part. If it all takes under an hour a day then I think that is a fair amount of time for maintenance.

So you have to top off your tank 2 times a day, how come? does the water evaporate that quickly in a reef tank?

Also, do most of you guys use tap water with conditioner or do I NEED to buy a RO/DI filter. I know it is better to have one but is it really necessary?

I highly recommend an automatic topoff system. This way you won't have to top off your tank, ever. You will have to make sure to top off your topoff though ;) If you can fit a 20g-50g Rubbermaid tub in your humble abode, then you will have to topoff your topoff less frequently. Water continuously evaporates. So doing it multiple times a day will keep the system more stable. RO/DI is highly recommended.

OMFG, im starting to get turned off with all the things I need to buy just to have some corals in my house. Jesus Christ. There is so much involved. I had no idea. All this is free in the ocean. I prefer to just top off myself. I am not lazy. I think the fun part is actually being involved in certain aspects of this hobby.

What is bad about using tap water and using conditioner and testing it prior to putting it in your tank. :irked: :givebeer:
Maybe I should just buy a good telescope and look at the stars, but that is also about $1,500 for a good one. lol........
