Hey guys,

Bout 5 days ago I found this Toadstool at a LFS that's all about $. Doesn't take care of his tanks at all and over-charges. He had this guy in a tank with hardly any lighting and all squished up in the rear corner looking bad. I love leathers of all kinds and laid down 45 to bring this guy home to see if I could bring him/her back. Judging by the photos of him in my tank 5 days later what do you guys think the chances are he'll make it? :givebeer:

It looks like it should be fine. I would be careful not to blast it with light if it's been in dim light for awhile.
I see it is shiny (not a terrible thing) and it might shed before the polyps start to open, but I would say it has an excellent chance of being just fine :)

Where is it placed in the tank?

Yes It didn't look shiny until the camera flash hit it. It's a mystery toadstool. Since I've never seen the polyps I have no idea what they look like! Color, etc. If it is shedding, how long can I expect the process to take? I mean at what point, if it doesn't extend, do I call it a loss? There has to be a cut off, right?

The signs will be clear if it begins to die..it will clearly rot.

Shedding is only the outer layer of the leather..it kinda looks like a thin layer of clear-ish looking slime, and it is very obvious. You do want to siphon it out of the tank when it does shed. It should only take a day or so while shedding and after that you will see the polyps start to be a little more obvious.
You are probably looking at a few weeks before it really starts coming into its own ;)

If it starts to so anything odd..post up a pic and we'll let you know if that stage is normal :)

As already stated the chances of your new leather are very good!!

You'd be surprise how long some leathers will pout.lol I had one pout for over a year. All the other leathers, softies, lps, sps, and fish were fine, and since it did not have any rotting edges, black blotches I left it alone. Then one day it decided to surprise me by extending it's polyps. Nothing new had been added, or removed from the tank, it just simply got over what ever.;) BTW, this particular leather had come from a very good LFS/MR vendor.:)

Just keep up your regular maintenance, and keep an eye out for rotting (which will be very obvious). It should be fine.;)
