This is the very reason I want to become a vendor. If you have ever bought from me, you know how I work. Lots of free stuff, and whatever $ I make goes right back into corals. And I LOVE visiting people and seeing the stuff they got from me exploding in their tanks and seeing how happy it makes them. It IS a hobby, and I want to keep it that way. Once ANY fun thing becomes a business, it is ruined. No offense to any vendors or businesses out there, I completely get why you charge what you charge. That is one of the main reasons I spend my coral money at the LFSs in NY, and at the Swaps, because THEY need to stay afloat too.(Get it? "Stay Afloat"???)

if you want it you will pay for it, if you want and dont want to pay for it you wont have it. i dont agree on $30-$150 zoa, but will say this, some just dont frag welland you go from trying to frag one to losing all of them, people can always go buy brown and plain jane corals { nothing wrong with that } but some of the slow growing and hard to keep stuff your going to pay for it. one good thing about having friends on here is you can find deals or trades, but to want what one person had to pay an arm and leg for and then to expect to get it cheap is like going to a porsche dealer with hyundia money

The market dictates teh prices but what really I hate is people thinking they are going to get rich off of this. When it stops being a hobby and starts being a perceived mean to an end that is when I get annoyed. Stop trying to be the next top coral hundredaire! and just pay it forward. Here is a thread I started similar to this.

$150 frag is a deal if it retails for $300. It's all relative.

You do understand that some chalice frags sell for $1000? I think chalices are overpriced too, but the market sets the price. If nobody was willing to pay these prices they would be cheaper. If you were selling a car that was worth $10,000 would you sell it for $5,000 to help out your fellow man?

If they are too expensive, don't buy them. Some day down the road they will be more common, less popular, and cheaper.

short and sweet ...if the price is too high dont buy it....it will either sell or that person will drop the price until it sells....sooner or later someone else will have the same thing and might sell it for a price you can afford.....you cant blame someone for trying to get as much as they can for something....me myself ..i am a nice person ..if i have something someone can use and im not using it i will help the person out....everyone is different...

that's just foolish. hooking up your buddy with a deal is one thing. but when you put up something for sale on a public forum you are going to ask for what it's worth.

you wouldnt sell a house or a car for half of what it's worth to be nice.

We are not talking about Cars. Cars have a blu book value. Corals do not.
Giving everyone a deal is not foolish. It is good kharma IMO.

the blue book value is just an estimation of value based on the average price people pay for a certain car.

The coral market works the same way, if something is priced higher than it is worth, nobody will buy it. There is no official book but you can google that specific coral and find out what people are selling it for. Same thing as a used car or any used item you buy from craigslist.

Not really. Blue book is based on original sale price minus depreciation and condition.
Nature does not have an original price of purchase, that I am aware of.
FWIW Googling the price of a used car is based on Blue book value.
Googling the price of a given coral is based on opinion.

no it's not. It's based on what people pay for said car. I wish i could buy a 1969 Mustang for the original sticker price minus depreciation and condition.

Aquacultured corals DO have an original price of purchase. I'm sure these MR members are NOT going diving for these fancy chalices and bringing them home. They are buying them from other people and/or vendors.

Googling the price of a coral and the price of a car will tell you the average price people pay for that item. There is no difference.
