and the curious chaser in the last pic is a yellow grunt right?

steve,

yeah they are all from Puerto Rico, I spent 2 months last summer and 1 month this winter snorkelling all over PR.

there are 2 main reef systems there. One stretching from just west of san juan (loiza) around fajardo and the offshore islands and over to the south to salinas. the other centered around desecheo off of rincon in the west.

sad to say the reefs are all in severe decline (you'll see a lot of dead reef), they had a bad outbreak of coral disease in both the antler and brain coral in 80s and runoff and costal construction and a lot of the reefs have been totally devastated.

you will need access to a boat launch to see real coral. puerto real in the fajardo has some commercial launches to the northeast that'll run to from $60 bucks to $150. and of course rincon and la parguera has the launches to desecheo.

Oh cool. Well thank you. I've been there many times visiting family and I just got into the hobby so while i was there I didn't think of going snorkling. But I want to go back some time this summer so I have to check it out. Thanks

my wife bought me a german-made enclosure for my digital camera for christmas.

basically it is incredibly difficult to shoot, usable shots are on the order of 10:1 or 20:1 even after I had a lot of practice. so i'd strongly advise against a disposable $20 dollar underwater camera with only 14 shots, or any film camera for that matter.

the fish are quick and darting and you can't put the camera to your eye to look due to the swimming motion, you have line it up with your line of sight extend your arms straight and hope for the best, just like you see in the documentaries on PBS.

If you have a powerful flash, it is probably better to use it, since the color distortion underwater really varies depending on condition. however, it might damage sensitive wildlife like squirrelfish etc so i'd use your discretion.
