I just purchased a marineland DD stand and canopy. Drove 8 hrs round trip to pick it up, to find it was not the the color or condition listed. The color is black.
This does not match my decor. Has anyone stripped a stand before? Stand is 6'X3"X 29''. Would it be worth doing this myself or having it quick stripped by pro?

I would be concerned that SOME the 'wood' underneath COULD be something like MDF, if so, you'd be wasting your time stripping it :( ( I have the 45g cube of theirs..and sincerely wish I could say that even the 'paint' was wearing well...)

There are ways to refinish a stand to LOOK like wood through the use of paint and a glaze, or you could just paint it a different color?

With the weather being this cold outside, I would not recommend that you use any paint stripper indoors. As suggested by kathy, could painting a different color work?

It is in good cond. I just dont like the black. I did save some money buying used. The wood is plywood with trim.I guess I will have to use a primer before I paint over the black, if I go the way. I have it in a shop now so weather is not a prob.

If your positive about the wood and have your mind set on a wood finish, you can get a good paint stripper at Home depot. It's a pain in the butt but with a little elbow grease you'll have the stand you want. Wear a respirator rated for the paint stripper, that stuff will surely make you sick.

BTW do a test on the back of the stand first, that way you don't ruin the stand if it doesn't come off as readily.

In some industries company's will often use the worst looking wood for things they are going to paint black and use the nice stuff for stained finishes. I'm not sure if thats how it is with these stands, but it is possible that the wood underneath may not be a pretty as the ones with stain.
Something to check on before you go through the trouble of stripping it.

If my memory serves me correct, all those stands are just covered in paint/laquer. You can sand it to matte it out and put a coat of paint on it. Problem solved. If you want you can put a coat of zinsser primer before you put your coat of paint on.

Anyways, what do you want to do to it after? repaint another color or stain it?

Bring it to dip and strip in Hakensack,NJ he will tell you if it can be stripped I had an old bar done by them and it came out great. I was told by a place that builds cabinets that it was vanere(sp) and stripping would be imposible maybe they did not want to deal with it who know`s.Here is their website:http://www.dipnstripservices.com/ Before (striped) and finished by me:

Nice bar....... I would like to stain it. The plywood that is not painted on the bottom of the stand looks like Maple. If so I think it would look good stained. There is a quick strip close to my house. I need to find out the size of there tank.
