SENIOR MEMBER!!!!!...they're not even high school SENIORs...how misleading to anyone visiting the site, that might listen to advise given by a SENIOR member!

I think the term Senior Member (and access to the User title option) should not be applied to anyone with less than a year (or more) on the board, without Mod's approval.

*posts by anyone disagreeing with my ideas will be not be tolerated! As you may have noticed I am now a SUPERIOR MEMBER!

i've noticed the same thing al... my suspicion is that these members are changing their titles themselves. kind of like how i changed mine to "tank thread junkie"

maybe there's a way for admin to prevent certain keywords from being used.

i saw you said that on that other wonderful thread which i thought was true. i was nice and sending that kid a few of my used heaters for free just so its finished and squared away...

now my question is... how much did you pay for "superior member" haha thats high class....

but i agree, i think admin should change a few around on false information like that...

I've been thinking that people should have in their sigs or at least in their bio information like type of tank (fowlr, reef, etc), and how long they've kept fish and corals as a minimum. It helps to understand the experience of persons offering solutions.

Yea but even when you say how much experience you have some people don't wanna take the advice. Just like on another site whn I told a guy he was gonna melt his center brace (not refering to anyone on this site) He said what do you know, Well now the center brace is gone on his tank and shortly after it crashed and it's all dead now.. I assume from the toxic plastic melting into the tank.

even though we have reefer rating and all for sales, i think there sound be something else, like a gold star or something showing that that member does not post anything but the truth and can be trusted, just so people know. i mean most senior members here know who is good and experienced, but for newer members. just something showing that they are extremely experienced...just an idea

We all reserve the right to take or trash any advice given. So you don't have to take somebody's advice because they've been in the hobby 20 years (even when it's good advice), but being in the hobby 20 years means you've seen a thing or two that I haven't seen yet and it makes me less skeptical. I still do independent research but it helps to know that you've been around the block. That doesn't mean that people can't lie on their profiles though.

once you reach x amount of post they get senior members, you can post a 100 times with no given info or help and become a senior member. then new people see a guy that has alot of post and takes it that hey he has high post he might know something. but then again you also have members who have been in the hobby along time and dont know chit { self included } i always tell people to look at the persons tank thread and see what their tank looks like before you take their advice

Or maybe provide a feature where the person asking for advice can award points to the person or persons whose advice worked. This could be a slippery slope though.

Ok for 1 thing you cant tell peoples expierence in the hobby by join date.ive had over ten years expierence in this hobby and probably know more about certain aspects then other even though i joined 6 months ago.the moderators need to monitor that title.when people put in new the the hobby then a junior title should be given.but if you know aspects of this hobby and can give great advise even though you are new to the site you shouldnt be branded with a junior member title

i will say this, if a person ask advise and takes it without doing a little research on the advise that was given to them, then it really makes no differance. lol thinking instead of senior members it should say I POST ALOT which doesnt make u a senior lol even though some of you are senior's in real life lol

I don't see a huge problem with "Senior Member" etc. status.. I pay no attention to what people say on that line anyway. I do see how a "newbie" could misinterpret that status, though..

And let's be honest..If someone gives bad advice on this board it usually gets rebutted pretty quickly. To add to this point... when someone is too stubborn to listen they're not going to care how much experience you say you have anyway.

The only thing I think should be changed--- posts in the for sale/for trade forum (and the Nudibar) should not count toward your overall post count. (Even though a high post count doesn't necessarily mean a high level of "reef intelligence").

On a final point :lol2: ...simply having years of experience doesn't mean you're an expert either. I've talked with quite a few people who have "years and years" of experience who use outdated technology, overstock their tanks, can't keep SPS, etc, etc. ..I've also met many more people with fewer years of experience than I, who make me look downright stupid by comparison. :D

I also agree. Doing salt water for years means nothing. I know a lot of people who have been doing salt water for 5-10 years, and still has no clue on the correct technics to solving issues. To be honest, before i joined, I had maybe 4 years experience. 4 years sounds...alright i guess for some general knowledge. Trust me, i did not, until i joined this site. Once i joined here, holy cow, i can not tell you how much i learned. Within the first month of reefing while i was on this site, i changed everything in my tank and turned out so much better because i took advice from many members on here. Before this site, if you told me anything random, let's say ESV salt. I'd be sitting there like.... I don't know what that means, and why did you abbreviate it? You could say any skimmer name and i would be like... Ok.cool? I been on here for about 1 year as a guest or whatever just checking it out, then a year later signed up. You can ask anyone, I joined here, and my first posts, were about problems I had! And they were fixed instantly by certain members which was greatly appreciated. I am on this site ever single day posting things, reading things, asking questions, ect. And I now have close to 2000 posts. Does that mean I know a lot and an expert? No f'in way. And does that mean take my advice over others? No. I know an ok amount, but others with less posts or whatever most likely have better ideas and opinions. Whatever advice to take is at your own risk.
But to be honest with you, when you are new on this site, and you see someone with high posts, it is quite intimidating and makes you think they know a lot more then others. but in the end, no one here is an experts. A lot of members know more then others, but unless your a marine biologist or something, no one can be considered an expert. you may know more, but you don't know it all. Get advice, research that advice, and see if it's the right choice for you. If you think it is, then go for it. Its probably a better idea then you originally had.

Yea that goes both ways, some people have been in the hobby for a long time and are still stuck in the stone age, And there are some newer hobbyist that get it right the first time. Most of them have one thing in common though. They didn't rush into anything and they did their research. I have seen plenty things change from day one until now. I mean the big thing years ago were 5 and 6 foot skimmers. You know how much room those took up lol. And also just because you do suggest one thing doesn't mean it will work in another tank, There are to many aspects that you don't know or if even that other person even took all or just part of the suggestion. I have a buddy that has hair algae in his tank and I even took rock from his tank and put it into a smaller tank to show him it could be fixed. Well I returned his rocks to him nice and clean and they are covered in hair algae again. Some people don't care and will never learn no matter who gives them advice or what it was.

You also have to take high post counts into consideration, I have over 2,000, where they all on advice? No way, There are to many other things going on, on here besides advice. I mean some threads are about Cars, TV's, Houses, ETC. The main thing for a beginner or anyone else who has a problem or wants advice is RESEARCH.

I think this should be changed as well. Senior member should not be automatic after a certain number of posts, especially when said posts are mostly spent in the sale forum or arguing with members about silly stuff.
