just got back from fistown. the place was packed, and wreaked of glue fumes(they are installing more sw holding tanks downstairs?) they should really expand the narrow SW section UPSTAIRS.

such a sorrowful sight, a baby batfish floating around upside down barely alive and totally disoriented, in a tank full of dozens of other fish. some girl was asking its price or whatever probably just out of curiousity and compassion?

don't most pet shops have sw sick tanks? or they don't bother? :(

Yeah, fish volume is definitely an issue at FT.
I was there the other day and saw the baby bat fish, sad for them to collect such a fish only to sell it for $25

And ppl helping fish town kill more fish

so how are we helping this :scratchch
I always here how FT hows so many fish dying on them ,but yet we (not me) buy from them
I went there once in my 3 years or so in the hobby ,and that was the last time i did.It like a cemetary for fish

I would be happier to know that you guys bought fish from caring aquarium stores,I dont have fish tanks yet,BUt the one that i do get and picked up that same day are healthy.so i dont order much fish.
But a store that cares more about money then the fish they sell is a good way to support killing these Beautful animals
That Is just SAD to me that there are so many threads abou FTs fish dying

all my fishtown fish survived, i have never had a real death because fish bought from fishtown, yes they are a bit weaker, but i had a real good success rate.
For you maybe ,but what abou the poor fish that dont even make through acclimation. From what i understand they do not acclimate fish.SO tht is 1 reason they care less about the fish and more about the money ,,the customers are acully watching and rushing them to put the fish in the tank so they can buy them ..but yet after buying ,post a thread on fish dying ,,,,,,so whos to blame ,the store or the ppl wanting to buy cheap fish ,but still complain about how many fish die in their the tanks
So basiclly its cool for fishtown to kill lots of fish to let custy get good prices ,but Petland cant hold a living fish in a small tank
not any diff if you ask me

I was at fishtown tonight to pick up some FW plants and some SW snails. What a pitiful sight in those "solitary confinement" cubicles! There were 4 dead leopard wrasses, laying there untouched, at $60 a pop, 1 dead other type fish, not sure what kind, priced at 149.99! Also, at least a dozen others in the $20 - $40 range. Of course how much they lost is not the concern here. Imagine: you buy a fish that's still alive for the monent, but........
The thing is, the store wasn't busy, not many customers, and at least one of the employees was POLISHING THE GUMBALL MACHINE by the koi pond! How about getting the dead guys out?
Man, I'm glad I'm not really buying fish anymore!

i buy from them since the prices are right. honestly the fish are doomed before they even get to ft. you have to think about the practices of obtaining those fish. now, if someone could point me to an lfs that sells farm raised (not wild caught) fish i would probably go there instead

deepwater do you have a basement or ground floor? i always thought it would be neet to see somebody selling fish out of their place in that caring way. would be neat. when i sold my extra guppies on ebay and craigslist, they went like hotcakes (or greys papaya lol)! people like in CA and FL were asking me for more after i sold out, it was so weird.
of course it was just for fun, not to make money although every dollar does help toward our very expensive hobby.

Wow people do buy inexpensive fish online huh. I should follow your foot step and breed those in no time for some quick cash to support my SW tank:sgrin:

Biggest problem at FT from my ONE trip there would have to be the lack of knowledgable employees. They were awefully nice, but did not know much about reef tanks.

I was very impressed by how they were acclimating their fish. Bare in mind that ALL shops have very high death rates, the "good" ones just get the dead fish out before customers see them. A LONG LONG time ago when I worked at PetLand (one of my first jobs) the first thing we did in the morning was to remove all of the fish that died the night before.

The way fish are transported we are very fortunate to have such high survival rates. I would think that FT's care in acclimating them has improved their survival rates. Although the way the keep the fish is horrible. (I saw two copperbands in the same tank beating the crap out of each other, fish that should have been in a tank with sand and/or rock in a bare bottom cube and other things that stressed the fish out and will lead to more fish dying.

I haven't been to fishtown yet but as I understand it they import their fish directly skipping over the middleman. So you seeing the dead fish that you don't see at the wholesalers. Fish die at the wholesalers but they don't ship them.

BTW, they get those low prices by importing directly.
