Im currently piecing together a 120 gal that im going to set up in october when i move. For lighting Im looking at the evolution led 120w pendants for sale on reefkoi. My plan was to get two of the pendants for a 4' tank and a two bulb vho retrofit for actinics. For a 72" tank id say youd prolly wanna get three of the pendants. They use 1 watt bridgelux emmitters, ive seen them in action and they are BRIGHT. The cool thing about them is you get good coverage with them too. I believe the fixture comes with a 90 deg. lens. They are available in 20000k and 14000k the 14000k is 50/50 blue and white each with its own switch and power cord. The units are $329 each. The three pendants should be more than enough, but if you really wanted to go for the gusto you could do a vho retrofit two 24" or 36" bulbs side by side in the back of the canopy and maybe a few low wattage leds in the front for moonlight. Ive looked alot at leds and these are a nice balance between cost, power and controls.

I'm sure you can find a simple wiring diagram for setting up an LED system on google. It's not very difficult doing the wiring setup, however the only setbacks would be the cost of LEDs, heatsink(s), lenses and building supplies and tools.

Here's a place that can get you started http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=/leds.htm#cree

You may also want to consider adding in a potentiometer to allow dimming.
Also if you know a little about electronics and soldering is a +.

24 CREE LEDs is about the equivalent of a 250w MH bulbs. I know the imprtant parameter is PAR, but that aside, if you use the 7-8W per gallon rule, you would need three (3) 250W MH fixtures. To that you would probably add some T5s to increase blue spectrum, so add four (4) 39W T5s. this comes out to 910W of lighting for a 125g Just FYI, I run dual 175W MH plus a 130W of PC Actinic on 57G tank (480W total).

so back to how many LEDs, for each 250W MH you need 12 Cree XPG R5 cool white and 12 Cree XPE Royal Blue. To that I would supplement 12 Cree XPE blue for additional blue spectrum. the yields 3 fixtures each with 36 LEDs. So you need 9 Meanwells (ELN-60-48D) to power all the LEDs. I would put dimmers on each Meanwell so you can adjust the light intensity.

I've been trying to get my fixture built (48 Total LEDs) but I've been so busy at work.

hope that helps. I ordered my stuff from RapiLED. there was a group buy in early January. it think we got 10% off the website prices. email [email protected] mybe he'll hook you up.
