:question: Airstones vs. pumps/powerheads for water movement, anyone have input on this?

FYI; not for filters or equipment, just watermovement.

Using airstones for water movement will result in extreme salt creep, which in turn will affect salinity levels.

:scratch: i read somewhere a scientist used airstones to replace powerheads for water movement. This was done so as not to destroy the phytoplankton an other micro-organisms with the water.
I must of missed something, saltcreep is not cool

I agree with Deano about using airstones. Using them would create a protein skimmer type of action in your tank. It's the same principal as a PS. As the air bubbles rise they would create a foaming on the surface, IMO. I'm trying to see how this type of water movement would be an improvement to the traditional powerhead and I'm having a difficult time figuring it out.

Nevertheless, welcome to the MR board and keep asking the questions. Someone will be able to chime in to help.

That is Why I inquired about this. I feel the author of the book fails to mention how this was possible, although claims success. :irked:

HW, you're welcome. And.........there are many ways to keep a successful reef tank. The philosophy supporting each way does need to be scrutinized though. This is one of those 'different ways' that I question. One of the cardinal rules of reefkeeping or even SW FO tanks are no airstones.

I used this as the base of the tank.
then I put A fiber mesh screen on top of it.
followed by a 1" layer of crushed coral,
screened the crushed coral and then added a 1"-2" layer of sand (pink samoa)
I ran out of sand so couldn't complete this step. Store had a low supply.
will get more tomorrow after work, along with some live sand
Any recommendations on the live sand please chime in.
Next I'll get live rock. only certain sizes and types to begin with. I'm trying to create a reef on a shelf which will in turn create a permanent shadow area.
I experienced this landscape when I was diving in the bahamas.
Theres life even where the sun don't shine.

Yes there is one behind the wrap around.
I plan on putting doors on it for easier access.
limiting funds restrict everything being done immediately.

Why the plenum? Going skimmerless with a DSB?

Make sure your zip-ties don't have metal clips in them. I know that some do and some don't, just be careful which ones you use. You wouldn't want metal in your tank.

I have plenty black and white asst. sizes they're great for everything.
especailly on my buddies bikes. they stunt to much.
