Trigger, nobody called you naive. I said, to dismiss the original post as not a big deal is naive. All I was saying is that any time someone takes the time to post a warning, whether you think it's trivial or not, you should always take it somewhat seriously because you never know how you may personally be effected.

99.99999% of the population may just get a rash from the flukes but you might be in that tiny percentage that has a lethal reaction to some enzyme it secretes or even an allergy to the organism itself. I'm not saying you should board the windows and live in fear but to dismiss these threads as hyperbole is naive.

Well I suppose there could possibly be a fraction of a percent of people that it might have a different reaction on but the chances are very unlikely. Kind of like getting struck by lightning or eaten by a shark..hey anything can happen I guess but it doesn't stop us from going out in the rain or going to jones beach. What about the people in north carolina who go in those waters every summer? Do any of them get diseases or very sick from the water? I would think if it was an issue we would hear about it. I also think that especially to hear from a vendor that he is concerned only about local snails having parasites that he is naive being that like I said damn near everything in the ocean carries parasites and bacteria.

I'm just saying that it was made out to be much more serious than it is. In most cases w/ these either nothing happens at all or you might get a rash. What about how they used to say if you have baby turtles you will get salmonella. I had tons of those turtles as a kid and I never got salmonella.

Dismissing a warning like where the fact is always the case would be naive like grabbing a lion fish by hand and not worrying about their poison or thinking not all mantis shrimp are evil lol

everyone here brings up great points, but i think the main focus here is that we need to be aware of risks that we may take for granted. there is always a possibility of anything, just know what youre getting yourself into so you can at least be prepared for anything unforseen or otherwise. my biggest problem with people is that they panic, i hate panic.

i have done alot of reading on this topic since original post and these snails get mixed reviews from reefers. Most reefers are not worried about possible parasites or bacteria. they are most worried about the fact that these snails are supposed to be in a cooler water climate. there metabolism runs at more than 100% at there normal rate in our reef tanks at 79-80 degrees. That means instead of living a full lifespan of 5-10 years there will die in 1-2 years or even less.

In the past i have bought from ebay also and i did not know the difference. I thought they were great. they did not eat any detritus or algae in my tank but IMMEDIATELY came out for any food that the fish did not eat. That was the purposeI wanted them to serve and they did a great job at that. BUT I just realized what happened to them I would say 2 years later I had NONE left from my initial purchase of 100.

I just kind of feel stupid because i found out what happened to them almost 5 years later:smash:

During the summer these snails find themselves in water that is way warmer than our tanks....they go right along the waters edge in full sun, where the water can easily reach the 90's. While I agree that they will not likely survive a full 10 years, they do live more than 1-2 years. Some of mine have probably lasted about 5 years now. On the other hand, those really fun and entertaining local hermit crabs never last more than a few weeks, so I don't put them in the tank anymore. In fact, mud snails are the only local fauna that I'll put in a reef tank.
