hello all, my name is steve and i am new here to manhattan reefs. I have been part of a couple of other forum sites, but was suggested to MR by a freind who lives here on long island. I myself also live on long island, in northport.
I currently have a 10g nano and a 29g reef. my 29 has become my main coral display, as well as my new home for fragging, until i get me new system running.
A little about me, i am a glassblowwer here on long island, and am continuously making new glass products for my reef tank, as well as many others. My latest creation has been glass frag plugs for propagation. I had seen them once before, but having the ability to tweak the design really helps. I have had great luck with these and am tring to spread the idea, while also spreading awareness to support your local glassblower and US made products.
I am VERY VERY VERY intersted in the frag swaps, and would also love to be a part of that. I know i just missed the last one, but hoping to attend the next available one.
i would like to extend the invite to anyone who wants to take the trip and stop by to check out/trade frags, as well as check out my glassblowing studio. I cant wait to meet new people here on MR, and hope that i can be as useful to everyone as everyone has been useful to me in the past. its time to spread the knoledge!

Hi Steve, welcome to MR. Great community here.

I went to school in NH and we had a glass blowing studio on campus, overlooking our on-campus ski slopes. I never took glass blowing (although I regret that till this day), but I did take stained glass. Another great 'hobby'.

I hope you post pix of your tanks as well as your glass designs.

Welcome aboard,
Russ

Welcome to MR.

I'm curious as to what advantages glass plugs would have over aragonite/ceramic/plastic?

mostly cosmetic look.. they are nearly invisible in the tank, and make frags look like they are floating...plus they are weighted so they dont move around.. and they do not need to be "pre-soaked" or "cured"... throughout my experiments i found that for some reason, stony corals encrust to the glass like no other.. mainly i would say these are most appropriate for high-end frag tank systems using some sort of eggcrate rack.. I have made "pegs" and "cubes" made out of glass for fragging as well... they tend to look better than the plugs in a main display tank..

I assuming that inside the glass plug there are some ridges, where the coral would grab onto, otherwise you could just basically pull the frag right off the plug. I would think that this would mostly apply to SPS type corals, as softies and Zoas would just grow over the glass, as they do in our tanks.

yup, they have little dimples and are grinded on the tops for the corals to encrust and grow/attatch to.... as for a glass frag rack... ;) .... lets just say its already in the works and will be coming soon! :)
