Just took over a friends 40 gallon tank want to know how many marine fish I can put in it.

IMO I would just add 5 fish only and a cleaning cRew and 2 shrimps

2 fire fish

How many fish is a frequently asked question but the temparament, how fast they grow and how they coexist with their tank mates is always my biggest concern.. On the other hand fish need space to swim comfortably. Some species will need even more space. I can't tell you what fish to get but whatever you decide be sure to research all carefully before you stock the tank.

Didn't you know about the 1 fish per gallon rule. :lol2: If he has a 40g tank he should be able to put in 40 fish in there.... ROFL!!!

If everyone did what they are supposed to do... like research, we wouldn't see all of those great helpful daily "OMG HELP ME" questions and tell people "I told you so".

Take notice to the words "BEFORE YOU STOCK THE TANK".
There are quite a few variables involved as noted by some of the other members. Your entire setup depends on what you plan to keep and what you keep depends on your setup.
Do as much research as you can about the livestock you plan to keep and match them accordingly to their tank mates.
Just about every person here has learned how important this is one way or another, usually the hard way. Good luck and welcome.

In taking over a friend's tank; what exactly did you take over? Is it just an empty tank? Or did you get an established tank with rocks, corals fish? Have you done any reading about salt water aquariums? Do you intend to keep it as a "Fish Only", Fish & live rock, or a full blown reef? You have been asked what your filtration is, just in case you didn't realize there are a few different ones for example: RR tank with sump, RR with sump & fuge, Overflow box with the same as the RR ones, hang on back filters, skimmer so on & so on.

+1. Also I always think its a good idea to remember that general guidelines on fish are just that. You might read success stories about one particular exception about a difficult fish but those good things rarely happen in this hobby without a lot of dedication. In fact you should always expect the worst case and be prepared. Fish all have their own individual personality that can change everytime you make changes to the tank so you have to allow for that variance even if they all initially get along.
