Need help purchasing LEDS....

I'm just recently googling LEDs ....I'm very green to understanding them...I want growth and color , if money wasn't a issue to u what would be your choice of leds?...this is a site I came across http://aap.atrixnet.com/?p=338 ....and I'm seeing tmc aqua ray and Orphek brands are looking good as far actual usable light for the corals.....any input would help...thanks guys

IMO i would go with Ai sol light but didnt have the money at the time so i purchased different ones. But give Russ (saltwatercritters) a pm maybe you can do a layaway plan with him for the Ai sol it doesn't bother to ask =)

what size tank are you lighting ?? i have 4 AI sol blues over my 90 gal and could not be happier i have seen acans and radoins in person and in my opinion they dont compare actually the new AI vega is comming out soon also ill try to find the link

just my 2 cents i would get 4 and dial them back it is the same foot print as a 90 just not as deep i had 2 to start mounted long ways and when i got the other 2 mounted the standard way things just took off its up to you try 2 at first and see what you get

A single Orphek DIF-100XP w/120 degree optics would cover the entire 75 if you suspend it high enough. That would be the most advanced LED currently on the market and a single unit would cost less than 3 or 4 of the others.

I'm curious how much higher I would need to go to make up that additional 12" of tank length? This would put the light at more than 34" above the sandbed. I don't see a single unit being useable over a 48" tank. Maybe i'm missing something? An if it's a rimmed tank this creates an even bigger issue due to the center brace blocking the middle of the tank. I'm looking to cover a 48X24X24 tank w a center brace possibly. As far as cost, I think you would need 2 units to light a 48" tank. At $800 each I don't see any savings over going AI or Radions. 2 AI's or 2 Radions could easily cover a 48" tank. 2 AI's are roughly $900, 2 Radions $1500. Right?

+ 1 .. But the tank he has,has no center brace. And don't for get the lose of par for it being mounted so high.

The DIF-100XP is not the same price as the regular DIF-100. The XP is the second generation of Orphek's multichip technology. Even with the regular DIF units you can light a 4' x 4' tank if you raise them a little over the 12" suggestion. These are not comparable to the other LEDs mentioned. The DIF units are direct halide replacements and the 100 series is in line with a 400w halide and only uses 100w. 120 degree optics at 2' will still put out more than enough light to grow SPS on your sand if you wanted to. The regular DIF-100s are capable of keeping some corals as far as 6-9' of depth with the 60 degree lenses.

This is the 300 gal at Fauna with 4 of the regular 100s with 60 degree optics and 3 of the 30s in the blue/UV multi chip. The new XP units would negate the need for the smaller blue units. I recently added a frag of pink lemonade that came in browned out and put it on the sand bed. It's already showing more signs of growth than the frags we had in the shallow drag tanks under 250w halides.
