I say it's unnecessary because a lot of the functions could be achieved just like it was in the past by using digital timers with power strips. You can run a very successful tank with out this device. And an apex will not improve your tank. That is All up to the user. If you don't do water changes but have a apex your tank will still look like crap. Lol

If you go away on vaca, or work, any controller with web access is piece of mind. Couple a controller with a web cam and u can go away with piece of mind. Also u can give a fellow reefer access to watch over it if u don't have cell/web service.

This is actually more of a reason i bought it. It also can be an excellent fail safe. I need to get a battery backup at some point too

A Controller is not "unnecessary".

If you read, you will see many many people have issues with their heaters getting stuck in the on position! Even with the heaters with their own controllers. The APEX will be able to kill the power to the heater if the temp gets too high.

There is also another member who made their own Auto Water Change system with the Apex.

There is a ton that you can do with it, yes you can just use good old timers!

But others have it also set to where if the temp gets too high, it kills the heaters, then kills the lights, then if still to high it will turn on a fan, then it will turn on the AC in the room.

I have "A LOT" of money invested into my tank in livestock alone! Probably much much much more than the cost of the controller. For that reason alone the investment was worth it for me.

I just added a lot of frags and went away this weekend. Im able to turn my halides off a few hours earlier to acclimate my corals while away without changing timers or anything all from my iPhone. For a reef addict which I'm sure most of us here it's instant gratification. We worry about a lot of things with this hobby. Anything to make it easier is worth it

Just be careful one outlet on my dc8 failed in the on position. I have to send it in for warranty repair. I don't want to because that's 8 outlets that I would have to go put manual timers on. Like every piece of electronic equipment we own it Can FAIL. I guess I'll just name it "stuck on and put an air pump on it.

Yes all set up. May be the best purchase for my tank. I love it. The feed function has to be the best to be able to start the feed and then leave the house and then all the pumps come on automatically with the skimmer coming on last.

I just got a breakout box and equipment to do an Auto Water Change system. Need to pick up 2 pumps to get that working.

I also want to pick up another module so that I can monitor salinity and that will give me another temp probe for my SW mix...
