So i found a listing on CL and someone was offering up some not so live rock for free....I'd say about 40-50 lbs or so, I'll find out when i pick it up today....

It is listed as not so live rock because it was once live in a system that crashed and has since been sitting in saltwater with no circulation so it is most definitely dead, I have 2 running systems currently which I will be combining into a bigger system once i finish the build on my upgrade so I could use the rock

What is the best way to go about introducing this rock back into a running system, should i rub as much as I can off of the rock and add a piece or two a week to the tanks until its all added in, should i recure it? If its possible i'd rather not set up a seperate bin to cure rock since i am limited on space

any advice would be appreciated

I had a hair algae infestation and had to remove most of my rock. I bleached the rock (80-100lbs) to kill off everything then rinsed it thoroughly(daily rinses for a week). Afterwards I recured it for 6-8 weeks (I forget) in a large garbage pail with active water from the tank. I had a heater in the pail along with a couple circulation pumps. I tested the water often and performed water changes as the water cycled. Once the water was free of ammonia and nitrites I re-established the tank.

Your best bet is to cook it just in case rock has aptasia or some other nasty stuff on it
Then cycle it in a garbage can ones cycle is done u can add it to your tank
I would be worried to add rock from unknown place it might have copper in it so u need to test it before also people add not reef safe medications to their tanks to get rid of ich and other stuff
So its a risky biz to add rock like that

i know exactly where it came from, met the guy was very nice. It was in a previous reef tank that crashed when their AC went out earlier this summer and was just sitting in the water (which was fairly cold) since then and the rock is most definitely dead as of right now with no signs of any kind of life on it....i'll probably let it finish drying, clean any and all algae off of it and then let it cycle again in a big Rubbermaid Tupperware and add it to the tank once I have the tank running and the rock cycled
