I am in the process of setting up my shark tank. I have been doing research as far as the maintenance and care of sharks. Questions I have is someone suggested a sand filter and a bead filter due to the waste these animals make. I am looking for anyone who has information on sharks. Who currently own sharks or have owned sharks in the past. I have a 265 gallon long tank. I know most people suggest a rounded tank but at this time I dont have one. I will be using live rock for filtration as well as a skimmer. Some sort of nitrate reducer. If anyone has or knows anyone who could share some more information with please let me know as soon as possible. I will be setting my tank up within the next week. thank you all

One adult bamboo shark you can be fine with in a 300 minimum ..

I was reading up on the papua new guinea epaulette shark on advanced aquarists site and they claim that they would be fine as adults in a 180 gallon

Do you have a round tank? Tanks with corners are not advised either.

Live aquaria recommends 360 minimum...

Benthic sharks are ok in smaller tanks and I would say a 265 would be pushing that minimum since they don't need the height as much as the floor space. Epaulettes aren't going to swim much and they're nocturnal so you have to really like them to appreciate them since they aren't going to do much (especially in a small tank). Sharks are also very sensitive so my best advice would be to read up on the specific species you want before making any decisions, they're all very different as far as needs.

If you just plan on keeping one I don't see a need for a sand filter unless you want to spend the money and want the extra peace of mind.

Why not just run a mixed reef with some beautful fish? It may be a constant struggle trying to keep a shark tank going.. Just my opinion. I understand the cool factor but I just feel so bad for the sharks...

The whole shark tank thing is more of a "Cool factor" but it's not as cool as you think. Any shark that is in such a small tank isn't going to do much and the species of shark that stay smaller are boring and don't do much anyway. If you want a real shark tank that is going to be interesting get one that is 5000 gallons and put a black tip in it. Sharks should be in the ocean not in our homes unless we can really house them properly. Can you put a shark in a 265? Sure! Will it live a long and happy life..definitely not. Don't torture the poor creature do a reef tank and get a lot more enjoyment out of the tank.

get a large, angry tomato clown, will be much more dangerous to your hands in the tank and much more impressive to your friends. no joke.

Maybe look into a grouper or eels or something you need a larger tank for sharks.....could you lock a dog in a closet and have it live, sure but it won't be much of an enjoyable life, same for that shark even a small one

Everyone's comments are so true!!! Having a nurse shark for over 10 years is s ton of work!!! Nobody will take him and me and my brother are stuck with him for ever!!!
sharks belong in ocean or in large tanks! If you want sharks stay with the ones that stay on bottom but don't get nurse since they grow fast! See my thread below.
300 gal is the smallest to start but be expected to get bigger tank since you can't sell or donate them. Like some people say go to the Aqurium to see tanks and stay with groupers,eels,triggers of you want mean fish!! PM me if you still want to go buy them and I can lead you in right direction if you have $$ to spend and tank size is not a problem in future. Just remember no LFS will buy back or take back since they don't usually have tanks bigger than 220gals
