They absolutely have done similar things to this many times... It's well documented. They're not perfect (no company is) but the vast majority of folks are more than happy with Ecotech.

I had an MP40 that was well out of warranty and the power supply went bad. I called them up, gave me an RMA#, sent it out Monday and I got a call Tuesday telling me it was tested and everything was ok except the part from the wall jack to the actual power supply. The guy said that just in case he was still going to send me a new power supply which I received the very next day. If you want to talk about customer service, Ecotech and Neptune are top notch (at least my experiences with them).

How about skimmers and reactors? There are definitely some quality pieces out there at multiple price ranges, but there are some crazy expensive ones too.

I can remember when no one wanted to see wires in DT so we went with MP's. now everyone crying about price I for one will be staying with mps cause I don't like to see wires in my DT lol.
I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned the corals themselves. Most corals are priced well, but how about the colony of 100's of zoos that a vendor gets for $10 and says "these are rare", chops them up, names them, and sells them for $40-50 per polyp?

I think this thread is yet again about cheap Jabeo pumps and people are trying to justify their purchase knowing well that they have zero track record for quality pumps in salt water. Dont we have enough of this Jabeo talk on here and enough banter on pricing in this hobby. Just look at the F/S threads if someone is selling brown ugly button polyps for 5 dollars people jump on them and you get 100 responses then someopne selling a gorgeous chalice for 50 bucks gets no response. You want your tank to look like it was thrown together go get these cheap pumps and ugly corals whatever makes you happy. You want your system to look like you actually care about your tank you spend a little more.

Thread is about overpriced gadgets, and is talked about accordingly. It does not say overpriced coral, which there is plenty of.
I guess Tunze pumps "look cheap" then, since the Jebao pumps look nearly identical. Haters be hatin. All talk, no show.

The thread actually started with discussing APEX controllers... I don't think the intent was to go into the Ecotech vs Jaebo again... but it has.
Anyway, my MP40s are definitely the most expensive items on my tank currently. I have a budget skimmer, LFS branded lights, DIY gravity ATO, and Via-Aqua reactors.
As far as controllers go, my ReefAngel controller was $275 and is probably the most important piece of equipment in my tank. It runs everything, keeps my informed when I'm not there, and automates my water changes. Without it, I'd probably have destroyed my return pump the few times I left my ATO reservoir valve turned off. Some controllers as someone has said may just be "glorified timers", but in no way would I consider that the case with mine.
I would say a controller is a must have item unless you are home all day and spend a lot of time with your tank.

I actually am bothered by the wires outside my tank... I've only been in the hobby for 11 months and have only known my MP40s on my tank, but one day I might switch for a "cleaner" look. We'll see..

Your coral and fish could care less how much you spend on your tank, as long as they are happy.

Really? Only difference? You know nothing about high end cars then. That is such an inaccurate simplified statement. What about material? Carbon fiber, alcantera. The craftsmanship, design and quality equipment.
A hut and a mansion is the same thing. They both provide shelter a mansion is just bigger.
Regardless what the example is, there will always be high end items that are sleek and expensive and low end items that will get the job done but it won't be pretty.

More like utility patented tech. While Ecotech has every right to hold a utility patent on a design they created, it also means no one else can legally build one outside the tank like it, unless they license it from Ecotech. That won't happen. It's not that it can't be done, it just legally can't be done.

People like you bashing products you don't own or never tried are the reason. You seem to think you know better, but that is far from the case. I never once implied "stealing", yet you come out and bash me because that's all you know how to do without having a civil debate, every time.
Attaching a magnet to a piece of glass is not hard work. Developing a quality pump that people want to buy is.
I love how you tell me to read a book about economics, and then profess your love to have a monopoly instead. Then you lecture me about hatred of companies, when all you do is bash anything with the word "Chinese" in it. Sounds like someone should take their own advice.
I do not "hate" Ecotech. I do not agree with their business practices, nor the prices they charge for features I don't need or want, and I have every right to think that way. It is my choice as a consumer to choose other options. Whether you approve or not makes no difference to me.

So what dont you agree with?? Having a patent that will give them peace that no one will steal there design? There are other pump designs cheap companies just dont want to pay for product and development but rather steal someone elses design so what dont you agree with? You still havent explained why this is the only subject you get involved with on MR??? You want a civil debate am i yelling at you or am i hitting a nerve so you think im getting pissed off
You are right, they won't do that, they would do better. Had a problem with one of my mp40 and called up ecotech to solve it. They fedexed that part over night at no cost for shipping or the part. Now for the price, yes it is expensive, but it is worth the money. You will find out when you are shipping anything over to china for inspection or whatever. Additionally you are paying not only for a good pump with great costumer service but for the innovation. We spend crazy amount of money on our reef tanks looking their best, that having wires hanging in the tanks is just not cutting it, at least for me.
On second note, probably the most expensive accessory is the hanging kit from ecotech. For a $900 light system, it should be given away for free.
