You did the right thing. Most ppl would have told him to $&@# off.

If you were the buyer how would you feel if the pump went bad on you 2 weeks in. Plus it's the net where there are shady individuals lurking.

after 2 weeks I wouldn't refund him. I might agree to split repairs if he was being respectful, but if I'm told I only have 2 options I would just tell him sorry. It was working when you got it and 2 weeks after you don't know what he did.

Main thing I am pointing at is if it was a skimmer and the pump died out after 2 weeks of working then you know you just have to replace the pump. It should be the same in this instance.

I hate the fact he gave me that email without explanation of steps he took to try to fix the issue. Did he try cleaning the powerhead, did filterfloss or anything else get to the impeller to cause it to stop. Etc. He has yet to email me back so who knows.

His previous posts shows he also purchased a multicontroller so what if that was defaults and caused it to stop? Did he have a power outage or voltage leak etc that could have caused it. I am only selling equipment locally now just like I prefer meeting at my house for corals.

From a vendors point of view....

Buy used, accept 100% responsibility. You sold an item that worked fine when you shipped it. The buyer confirmed that it worked fine when he received it. How do you know the buyer didn't drop it? Maybe they were doing an initial cleaning and they crack the impeller? How about dropping the power supply into the tank? Bottom line, it worked fine, you are a reseller that has no responsibility to offer any warranty.

Because you DONT know what he did or could have happened, you can't be expected to make any guarantees. I have bought things used and they've gone bad within days ( not weeks ) and when they did, no one was expected to make it right and rest assured no one did. The part I can't get over is the arrogance in the email, giving you 2 options. What a piece of sh#t. Who the hell does he think he is, talking like that?! All the more reason to show him the door. If for some reason he does dispute it through PayPal, he won't get far. That's why he's trying to bully you into making it your problem, because legally and rightfully, he has no recourse. Who's to say what he could have done to cause it to break. NOT YOUR PROBLEM! don't even give him the time of day after this point.

if it had stopped one or two days id say refund, but 2 weeks? thats 2 weeks of unsure what happened. Inform him of this. express that he purchased used and that brings risks. by all accounts, you're covered and are just practicing GOOD BUSINESS.

Thanks guys especially coming from you Rick.

I hate to not make it "right" but I cannot see how this was anywhere near my fault. I hope no one ever has to deal with this. I really lost interest in dealing via RC. I will put a disclaimer before I sell another piece of equipment to cover me as well the buyer.

I notified him that the item was working in my possession and he had it working for 2 weeks after verifying everything was working flawlessly.

Here is my future disclaimer in my sale threads and I suggest others do the same. I trust people on here but for RC/R2R, it is hard to deal with people over the web.

Disclaimer:

The items are in WORKING condition with proof of condition upon sale unless otherwise stated. If the item is defective upon placing onto your system or if I am notified in a timely manner, I will gladly place a full refund for the item minus your time or return. You must take the necessary steps to troubleshoot the item before deeming it "broken".

If this disclaimer is not worth your time, please feel free to not purchase from me. I am here to be a great seller and protect you more than others as a buyer.

Thank you and have a great day!
Mike

I sell a lot of items on here, RC and R2R. And on eBay, I am selling on eBay for around 12-15 years already. Actually if you look at my posts, probably 90% are sell/buy as I don't have time to start my build thread, and I have a lot of equipment to get rid of as I got too many things during my setup.

With anything used, I specifically ask the buyer to test it as soon as they receive it. Package delivered, they test it, it's all on them. You have no control over what goes on for the next two weeks, how the load is on the equipment, heat, moving equipment around the tank, dropping it, power surges, etc, so there's no way you can guarantee it will work for X amount of days after delivery or provide any warranty. Also that's the trick with used equipment - it can break. You pay less as you are assuming the risk, and sometimes things break.

I think you are on the right track. Make sure your bases are covered, as if the payment is over paypal for goods purchased (not gift) he can always open a paypal case and say you sold something broken. The e-mails you have should cover your in that case.

Yeah, I have all emails from him + my replies and video + image info on my phone for proof of everything.

He sent it to Tunze and will go from there. His reply after saying everything I had to say acted like his original email didn't say what it said. His reply was "I wasn't blaming you or assuming it was your fault".

I replied telling him his email and his response now is different from the original email and he should watch how he approaches a seller that has done almost everything to make sure he sells his equipment the right way.

Yeah, that's why I get scared of things breaking when selling used. I try my damn best to test and make sure an item is in working condition before I sell something. If not, I give it for free and others I have dealt with can attest to this!

Here was his reply yesterday:

Spoke to Roger at Tunze USA and he asked me to ship it back to him which I did today. Will keep you posted what turns up. We ran it for two days and unplugged it because it was too powerful. We ordered a controller for it and did not want to use it till it came. When I tried to run it the pump did not work. Was not accusing you for pump failure. Wanted to know if it had any issues so I can convey that to Tunze.

After he emailed me originally, I looked at his previous posts. He ordered the multicontroller on 2/27.

I can't fathom him receiving it a full 2 weeks later or taking that long to set it up. I know I track the heck out of my items and then can't wait to set it up or play with it.

He did say it was too powerful. I wonder if he was playing around with the jumper and either took it out while it was plugged etc.
