In your setup, wouldn't adding a valve after the carbon to restrict flow into the phosban, also restrict the flow exiting the carbon as well? In essence, your carbon isn't getting much more flow than the phosban.

i was thinking the same thing, it's gonna be the same flow through both...

Rowaphos isn't too bad if you buy in bulk. I found a place on Froogle that had the 1 liter size for about that price. I like it more than phosban as it doesn't seem as brittle.

Deanos, you are correct my carbon is getting slightly more flow than my rowaphos which is perfect. Carbon can handle more flow than phos-media can. I use a MJ 900 throttled back about half way. A Maxi-jet 400 would be fine but I'm too lazy to switch them. I accidently put the 900 on when I setup it up and I've never corrected it. The carbon gets a half force blast and then there is some overhead pushing through and going through the tubes so the rowaphos sees less flow than the carbon does. I suppose I could run them separately and give the carbon more flow but why? This system works very well and I don't think pushing more water past the carbon would increase efficiency.

Some things to consider. There are 2 basic types of media one is aluminum based and will only absorb so much and for a period of 2hrs up to about 2 days and the other is Ferrous Oxide (iron based, essentially rust) and will hold A LOT more phosphate without the chance of re-release. At this point within the two types brands don't matter much it's all the same stuff. Rowa was the first company to start with the iron based. I do not recommend using a reactor that will return directly into the tank since any of the ferrous oxide landing on polyps or corals of any kind can cause contact necrosis or kill off entire colonies. It is usually best to use a micron sock over the return tube from the reactor. I have used the kent reactor and the TLF reactor and essentially they are the same (how different can you build a phosphate reactor) the only difference is that the kent system is larger. You do want low flow through the reactor since any turbulence causes the media to collide and create a fine dust that can enter the tank. I think TLF recommends 80gph max and the TLF also comes with a ball valve where as the kent (last I saw) does not.

My follow up question was answered before I could get back and check responses. I am thinking of adding two reactors, one with a phosphate remover and use the other for carbon. I just need to figure out how I can shoe horn these things under my tank.

I might need to strap them to one of the sides of the stand as opposed to hanging them off of my sump. I am assuming that they can not be mounted horizontally, but need to be vertical?

I am having trouble deciphering the cost of rowaphos vs. phosban. One is sold by volume and the other is sold by weight.

A 1 liter tub of Rowaphos is 59.95
1200 gm of Phosban is 79.99

Anyone know which one is more cost effective.

Phosban have been more cost effective for me, I use about 2-3 of the 1200 gram tubs a year. However, someone in NJ found a source to buy the same Rowaphos media from the US manufacture for about $160 for a 5 gallon bucket. I got a small portion but have not tried yet.

any idea where they bought it from, that's a great price.

Cali,

I am thinking of setting up a reactor on my system and want to know more about the "shocking Coral" comment. I have not read anything about this in my research...please share.

thanks
