We have a mystery :scratchch.... I had enough Chaeto to fill a large ziploc bag (just trimmed last weekend). Yesterday I was checking out the pods that were living in it. Today..... ITS GONE !!!!! Not a single strand found stuck to the skimmer intake cover or in the two Mags (7 and 9.5).

Who could devour that much chaeto in one night? I have an idea but lets see what you guys think. All of the below listed have been in the refuge for quite some time with the chaeto.

Refugium Inhabitants:
  • Grass shrimp (4-5)
  • Chocolate Chip Stars (1-2)
  • A couple of small hermits caught in the LI Sound
  • One Peppermint shrimp
  • Eastern Mud Snails (4-5)
  • Common Periwinkle (4-5)
  • One Common Spider Crab :eat:

Have you checked your water levels lately? Caulerpa can die off very fast if your levels are out of whack.

I doubt any of those critters would eat back that much chaeto. Is there a rogue school of tangs in there you don't know about?

LOL. The Params are fine and in fact, I have an above tank Fuge on the same system with Chaeto in it. If it died, you would think I would find strands somewhere right? I failed to mention that there is red grape caulerpa that is still in there fine....

I did just change the light I was using on the fuge.... I went from 7100K to 5100K. I still think I would find some Chaeto stuck to the skimmer in take which is in the very next compartment with a sequence 3600 feed. Unless it is mixed in with the skimmate.

I just can't believe not a strand is stuck to the intake cover.

Yes. The local scary looking crab. He was in a nano I had set up with some polyps. It was cool watching him act as a decorator crab (although they are considered the same species) and walk around with coral growing on his back.

I couldn't find much information about spider crabs eating Macro algae but I could see it happening.
