ecosystem miracle mud

Well as the title states, I have a question about this system. If anyone who uses it please respond, Ecosystem claim that you do not have to use a skimmer, does anyone who has the system in place uses a skimmer? I was thinking about buying the mud and setting it up but want to know what people thoughts were on it. Thanks

I'm using Miracle Mud in my system. I've only been using it for 4 weeks, but so far so good. Keep in mind you will have a mini cylce, or at least I did.

I am using a Remora Pro protein skimmer. Everyone I have spoken to says the claim of not needing a protein skimmer is exaggerated.

You'll still need a skimmer, but the stuff works great in a fuge. My mangroves grew like you wouldn't believe in the stuff!

ok thanks, I was just curious. Because now I would have to buy a sump that has enough space for a skimmer but ill figure it out. I got the mud for cheap at saltwaterfish.com and decided I might as well go for it. It was 50 bucks for the 10 lbs bag.

I used it awhile ago with no skimmer, the tank was great. Was going to start a new tank with it,but I heard from a few people say that it turns the water a little yellow. I do not remember having that problem, but I have an unopened jar of it. I have been using Kent Biosediment instead and my tank is very healthy.

I do not believe so. I think the mud is just a (may be) better substrate than sand for macro to grow faster and thus "eating" up phosphate and nitrate faster.

All systems will have yellow water unless you do water change or other chemicals to remove the yellowing agents from dead organics. So far, I have not heard of a mechanical or biological method/equipement commercially available for reef application in removing the yellowing agent. Of course, if you are to able the Dupont AIDS virus membrane filter, then it's a different story.

Macros in my rock tank(with sand substrate) grow slower than the macros in my refuge( but there are other factors that could affect the difference here as well) plus I feel if they are not cheap, it's not worth it. You can do the same by making a bigger refuge with sandl. Well, the price difference in sand/mud and more light needed/less light needed is hard to calculate.

i use it. without a skimmer,my sump is an algea farm. i dont run lights 24/7. i only use cheatos. i too think some claims r greatly exaggerated.
a lot of people claim the mud is a POS. so use it to your own discretion.

i used it witha big a$$ skimmer and still got them. dont really believe in it, but it did make things grow quickly. also if your water turns yellow just add some carbon.

It soaks up the nitrates and phosphates... the roots suck it up and feed the mangroves.

The thing with mud is that it needs to be replaced often so it doesn't get saturated with nutrients. Once it does, it becomes useless or detrimental to the tank.

U.V.s just kill living cells that pass through. They will eliminate free floating parasites/algaes/bacteria/copepod eggs/etc. The good with the bad goes but the positives far outweigh the negatives as far as I am concerned. Yellow water is taken care of with carbon and other chemical medias.
