Cloudy Days

A thought came across my mind while i observed the weather this week.....since we are trying to mimic a natural enviorment wouldnt it be good for our tanks if the lights were to be off or dimmed for a couple of days as if it were cloudy around the area of a natural reef? As a couple of rainy days would pass by corals and fish are not under direct sunlight. Would it benefit our tanks in anyway? How long can Clams and Corals go with dimmed lights or just actinics on per say....? This might help get rid of nuisance algae in the process.

I've been turning my lights off for three consecutive days every single month for years.

My tank gets cloudiness when the temp goes above 82, and then they get a solar eclipse when its above 82.5 :lol2:

I've done it in the past as well. Works great if you have a algae that your trying to get rid of and even if the your tank is doing well the corals seem to react favorably to it.

rc had a whole thread about this.. I turn mine off for 2 1/2 days....or also when I see a cloudy day I shut it off...

i know the fancier lighting has cloud simulation like the ACLS and the PFO solaris

Like Wes said, the Solaris can mimic clouds crossing the tank and the ACLS by Sfiligoi can both mimic cluds and dim the halides 1% at a time to better mimic dawn and dusk. Geissman also has lights that will mimic cloud cover with built in timers and controllers in the fixture itself.
