Even so they are still using bulbs that are made of outdated technology LEDs to save cost. Of course, it they drop the price by half I would no longer complain. HAHAHHA

The built-in controller is of my interest though.

They use newer/better bulbs on the newly released units...

What are your guy's opinion on the quality of light it produces for photosynthesis. Is it good like the mhs?

My opinion is that the technology is too new and has not been tested long range enough to be able to make a definite conclusion on that.

We have one setup at my job and I watch it for its full daily programmed light cycle, and although it looks impressive, it is NO way nearly as bright as MH or even T5 HO's for that matter. You do however get a really nice fade in and fade out that cant be done with MH or any other type of standard lights. I assume that corals are responsive to the more natural increase and decrease in light patterns. too bad they just dont seem bright enough. IMO I would wait to see the next gen LED lights and what they have to offer.

Yeah i agree too with you guys. This new aquarium LED technology reminds me of a hybrid car. It cost thousands of $$$ more than the other models but it more fuel efficient. However by the time you enjoy the benefits, its time to upgrade again.

I think once the tech has been studied for some time it will be great but for now it's too early to tell.

Remember it's better to be a settler than a pioneer...............The pioneers were scalped!

which version solaris is it Orion? before we make blanket statements on how bright they are, it should be known that the PFO has already upgraded the Solaris LED unit twice. The new "I series" are the third revision and reported to be twice as bright as the original "G Series"

Also, PFO said upgrade kits will be available in early 2008 so the early adopters can upgrade their older units to the newer brighter LED's...

I have setups of Solaris new "I" Series and Giesemann Infinite 3 x 250W HQI/4 x 80W T5 next to each other on two 6' long, 30" deep tanks, you may come to my office to compare at next LIRA meeting.

Personally, I like HQI/T5 much bette than Solaris "I".

You can dim T5 easily and cheaper than Solaris, MH is also dim-able but a little more expensive.

Yes but the solaris has a fully programmable feature that is fully automated right out of the box. You get a full and complete dim that emulates morning, mid day and sunset. Once you program it, you dont need to touch it again, and it comes standard. I'm not saying I like it, but it is a feature.

If you are using one I4, the comparison is not proper. I maintain that Solaris should put more power for the price they charge. According to the manufacturer, 1(ONE) I4 is comparable to 1(ONE) 250WMh 15K. If we base on this ratio, very few people here can afford it.
The programming thingie is cool but I know some of the electronics junkies here can make the something close with even just X10 modules (not to mention UDP.)
