I need advice

does anyone know of any 1 additive for my reef tank that would suppliment all trace elements.The lfs tried to give me about 6 different bottles.I would like to keep some soft corals,fishes,etc..

if you only have soft corals you don't need to dose any elements, it best that you don't. most people dose calcium to keep up the needs from sps. trace elements are in the salts, just get a good descent salt

I'd say the only thing you really need to do is keep up with your water changes. Depending on the size of the tank, you could do them every other week or every week.

I keep an LPS/softie tank, with very few SPS all being montis. I dose B-ionic once every 2 or 3 days and the tanks doing great.

thanks guys,I have a 30 gallon tank.The lfs sold me coral vite and iodine so I've been adding those.The lfs recomended coral accel,iron and a couple other stuff all from kent marine.Anyone has any experience with any of these.

my suggestion is not to use any elements, just get a bucket of good salt. you'll be saving more money good for your tank and use it to buy frags :batangel:

i just do water changes for trace elements. If you will add certain things to your tank you may want to make sure you have right test kits for it too

I use DIY additives, but only for cal/alk/mag. My "guru" has been keeping reefs for 40 years, and only uses this routine, and it has always worked for him, so I ascribed to it when I started taking this seriously. The first time I had a "reef", I used the Kent products, and it was a disaster. Never add anything you are not testing for.

Regular water changes.

IMHO 10-20% weekly water changes, test your calcium, magnesium and alkalinity and add as needed. Water changes alone are often insufficient to keep certain elements at preferred levels due to uptake/use by the aquarium inhabitants and lack of the elements in the salt (cough IO cough).

Regular additions of iodine, when not needed, can cause unecessary molting in inverts and can build up to toxic levels for other aquatic life.

Iron is really only needed if you're trying to keep a show tank of macro algae.

On a small tank I agree with the water changes. But like Airborn said, if you don't test for it then don't add otherwise you will cause more harm then good.
