When I had my shop the electric was 1800-3000 that was two plus years ago and I had a lot of lights going including over 4500 watts in MH alone

$2500 in a home is insane

an old article about the rate increase from Con Ed

I'm glad the summers almost over, my apt runs 5 A/C's one of them a 35K BTU monster. This months electric bill was a staggering $730 thanks to the 20% increase in electric costs.

I can only imagine how bad people on Long Island have it, those rates have always been even higher than the city.

The increased cost has definitely got my attention and I'm going to try to lower consumption everywhere possible.

Has the electric increase effected you or your business's in any way?

i thought we were not suppose to talk about this? lol. well its killing me. now i have to say to the electric company -- @&$% ^#% *^&%(*&

I'm talking about it from a whole life stand point, it's transcended just effecting your tank.

The cost of energy has skyrocketed, what will people do if it's a thousand a month to heat the house? This article focused on Boston, but I'm sure NY will be no different :(

**** this. $300 this month and $400 last month and my apartment is like 450sq ft with 2 rooms. There isnt much I can do but downsize or get rid of SPS. I planned for efficiency but didnt plan to get hit this hard :irked: fyi my bill was never higher than $100 before this tank and coned's 22% increase. My girlfriend is ready to kill me and since we are done with AC for the year I wont have that to fall on anymore "its not the tank...the AC must be running badly or something"

I dont' know if you guys run any ceiling light fans but those are very good. It keeps the house cool and keeps the tank cool. Of course dont' expect it to be AC.

skylights are great, I don't have to turn the lights on till it gets dark out. then again my glass roof is a bit much, it's also the reason I need a massive AC for the summer.

re: inks question, I spend more on my cats than the tank. vet bills in the city are not cheap.

No chiller, just fans. I have a 12k AC next to the tank though. The tank is pretty stripped down:
OR 3500 return with manifold to run everything
eheim 1260 skimmer
1 vortech, 2 tunze nanos
misc. stuff LM3, AC Jr, Osmolator, heater was unplugged all summer

I guess its the light...it runs the MH's at 300watts each plus 216 watts of T5.

Its such a sweet light though... :)

I havent done much research on the ESCO's in NYC, are any of them fixed rates?

 juSt wondering, do you guYs spend this much monEy for any of your other petS? dog, cat, geKkos, parroT, girlFrnd, etc...

You included girlfriend under pets?

If you buy enough con ed stock that the dividend pays your electric bill, is that a good investment?

PaulB is installing panels on his house.

I am installing them even as we speak (or type)
I finished all the wiring and I installed 6 panels today. Tomorrow I will install another 10.
I ordered another 6 panels which should arrive by the end of the month. At that time I will turn it on and see what happens.
It is supposed to save me about a third of my bill or $900.00 a year.
I am a retired electrician so I did it myself. If you have to hire someone it costs about $5.50 a watt or about $23,000.00. Out of that my power company is rebating me
$12,000 and the state and federal govt. is kicking in $5,000 in tax returns.
If you hire someone to do it, it will pay for itself in about 6 years depending on where you live.
Of course people in the mid west get more sun so they will do better and your reef needs to face south.
After I get mine going I will be selling these systems in NY. With the labor included by
union electricians. They sent us to classes to install it and the SHARP panels are built in the US.
