ro/di problem?

hi,
so i have been using an aquasafe ro/di system for 3 months now. i had a local plumber guy install it. at the time i tested the differences in phosphates, nitrates and alkalinity between the ro/di water and my local manhattan water. it seemed like the ro/di water had 0 nitrates, 0 alkalinity but similarly low phosphates (like 0.5 or 0.25 or less. i cant tell since the colors on the testing kit are so similar...). today i finally got a hannah tds meter and was surprised to find that while the tap water read 45ppm my ro/di outpu was at 55ppm!!!

how is this possible?

Maybe your DI resin is exhausted.

Which out put are you testing on the RO/DI? The slower or faster output??

The faster output is the WASTE water, the slower is the water that should be at 0ppm

i dont even know how to access the waste water. i'm just talking about the water that comes out of the filter's faucet

Can you post pictures of how your RO.DI is set up?

Is it plumbed into your pipes or do you attach it to the sinks faucet?

but how can the waste be coming out of the same faucet where the clean water should be coming out from?

maybe the membrane is bad. what did aquasafecanada.com say?
its hard to believe water got dirtier after it gone thru the filter. try tds on the waste water.

The yellow line going from the membrane to your drain pipe is the waste line, unsnap that, drain some into a cup and test it. It does sound like something is up with your membrane. I would suggest testing in a couple of different places to try and identify the problem area.

1) Red line from water source to RO/DI unit
2) White or blue line coming into membrane leaving carbon filter
3) White line going into DI from membrane
4) Blue line leaving DI to reservoir

interesting new developments:

so i opened up the white housing for the ro membrane and was surprised to find it empty!!! turns out the plumber installed the system without the membrane. i went to the original box with the 'reserve membrane' (guess this was originally mean to be installed) and put in. when i measured the tds it was even higher now!! in fact it was twice as high as the feed in water. i should mention that the membrane was taken out of its sealed bag by the plumber 3 months ago and has been 'naked' since then. is there any chance its now defective or maybe i need to flush it before measuring? through this process i learned how to hook up the hoses so i'm pretty sure everything is hooked up correctly.

If the membrane has been open for 3 months, chances are it's shot. I would definitely call the plumber, tell him what you found and see if he offers any remedies...You'll probably need to get a new membrane regardless. PM me if you need one, we have them in stock.

I'd get in touch with the plumber and ask him to pay for the cost of the replacement membrane, those things aren't cheap and he should have known better than to hook it up like that

anyone know of any local suppliers from who one could get di resin and ro membranes same day?

This why I do everything myself. You might be able to get a membrane from home depot or lowes not sure about the resin.

does the kind of membrane matter or are they standard and will fit all filters such as aquasafe

I believe most of those parts are 'standard' in the industy size wise.

I've only been there once, but give New World a call and ask if they carry them. Think they are 38th st & 1/2nd Ave's (or close to that).
Also can try Wonderful World of Fish in Astoria - they are a vendor here so you can find their # on one of their posts in the Vendor Forum.

Those would be the closest to you (I think) that might have them.
On line are probably priced lower, but you need it asap...
